If we're talking about the same site, there's absolutely no comparison here, and I don't know why thought it was valid. That site was only used for people to post revenge porn and pirated content. It wasn't in any way a legitimate platform actually used by creators to promote their content. It's an objectively good thing that it got shut down.

The issue you're talking about happened over a year ago and it specifically targeted things like patreons for porn websites and private cam sessions. It was also just a clarification on an existing policy that was always there.

There's already an anime about that called A Boring World where Dirty Jokes don't Exist. They kind of milk the concept a bit too much though. It's also likely never getting continued since the VA for one of the main characters died unfortunately.

I don't want to go into detail because I'm lazy, but basically there is a legal loophole where a website that hosts user submitted content isn't responsible for illegal content either posted by their uses or illegal activities done by their users.

It's how Imgur, Reddit, and Facebook get away with thousands of cases of copyright infringement daily.

The goverment didn't give a fuck and just arrested the Backpage guy for a horseshit reason and Craigslist, out of fear of being targeting, removed personals immediately after

Craigslist at the same time also changed the gigs section so you have to pay money to post a gig, and you can't post "adult" gigs anymore. Somehow, art modeling is lumped in with this and so we can't post art modeling ads under gigs anymore. This has greatly affected things for a lot of models, artists, art schools, photographers...

As noted Craiglist dropped adult content for legal reasons. The others are mostly due to ad revenue. Non-NSFW sites get much better ad-rates than NSFW sites. I'm sure with something like Tumblr they are hoping that the drop in users is more than offset by being able to make money on the remaining users.
