Apparently, they were going to call him a name similar to Dirk Diggler, and he said he'd rather have the first name Dolph after his grandfather Rudolph, and then for reason, WWE changed the last name to start with Z.

It was supposed to be a joke. He'd go around saying "Hi, I'm Dolph Ziggler." to everyone and it was supposed to be funny because his name was ridiculous.

I always thought "Curt Hawkins" and "Zack Ryder" were always too dull as pseudonyms. Might as well just have them use their real names if that's the best they can come up with.
