They've used SEO poisoning to take over the google results when googling the names of windows update files.

And their hijack programs are getting more frequent in occurrence.

it works though!

Did you hear about the GWX debacle in 2016?

Only reason I didn't get that is because my computer was a 2008 running on Vista.

GWX is "Get Windows 10", a program they snuck into Windows 7 and 8 by packaging it with unrelated updates. The program would constantly show popups and try to get you to click buttons that would update your computer to 10. It used malware-like techniques to make itself very difficult to disable or delete.

It forces updates on you. You'll get it whether you like it or not. It's attributed to malware and rogueware.

And you can't turn it off, there is no option to.

The final straw with me was when the "postpone 4 hours" option just got grayed out after postponing it so many times, so you're just stuck there watching a 15 minute countdown and there's literally nothing you could do.

I know that the "update to goodness" happens every 45 minutes, with 15 minutes before it autoschedules.

I have knowledge of how to temporarily get rid of the files that directly attribute to the rogueware.

(At least malwarebytes does pop unders, which means it will not automatically become your active window, while MS updates will become the active window and disrupt what you are doing immediately...for example when I'm trying to AAA a song on Stepmania.)

huh really? Might be because I'm on a later version or because I've tinkered with some stuff I forgot but there is no more automatic updates like that me. It's either it updates outside of active hours or you can schedule the day it updates and I've been scheduling it for 2 days later every single day for around 3 months now. There is no way to get the computer to shut down without updating though since it's "restart and update" or "shut down and update" without force shutting it down (which I'd rather not do) so I'm going to eventually have to update. The scary thing is that this update is the one that's been deleting documents which is why I've been planning to backup my drive first before doing it but I haven't found the time to do so

You had control of what you updated, and would not force you. Just ask anyone what they would say if you rammed anything down their throats (literally) and I would assure you the answer would not likely be positive.
