It's ludicrious that fighting games still haven't worked out they can just put an "unlock all characters" toggle in the options, this shouldn't be so hard -- no one should be arguing this, they could fullfil the wishes of both sides but for whatever reason just don't...

Unlocking characters was cool back when it was a surprise, but now we know everything immediately, months before the game comes out. There's no longer a point.

Also, unlocking characters has nothing to do with paying for characters. The former is game design, the latter is business practice.

maybe if you live your whole life on the smash board, idk shit about anything about smash since melee...its all new to me

I haven't played a smash game since 64 and havent read a single thing about the new one coming out. I'll be getting it day Friday and am pretty psyched to just be able to play it again almost 20 years later. Unlocking characters will be a suprise.

Whats some of the biggest changes since the original?

I loved break the targets, challenge mode, classic and adventure mode in Melee. It was super fun. It's different. There's no incentive to play these modes if you have everything unlocked from the get go.

I remember recently, like three years ago, my friends and I brushed off the GameCube but had no memory card, so half us left to buy a new one while the rest of us worked quickly to unlock everything. We got everything done besides Mewtwo. Then we played VS for five hours and got him as well. It was such a fun day.

The basics are still the same but there's been mechanics added since 64. Smash attacks, and Smash balls/Final Smashes, etc. But you will still enjoy the hell out of it. If anything it's just that everything is more chaotic.

There's no incentive to play these modes if you have everything unlocked from the get go.

The incentive is "it's fun." If I don't enjoy it, I shouldn't be forced to play it to get the character(s) I want.

If people enjoy classic mode, great. More power to'em. I wouldn't take these modes away from anyone. But it's not why I personally play Smash. 99% of my time is spent playing online. I don't want to spend however long getting all the characters.

The point is, as someone else mentioned, there's not even a reason this should be a debate. Just provide a button to "unlock all," or even toggle a switch that lets you turn the un-unlocked characters on and off. So like let's say Smash comes out and your friend is coming over to play, but you only have one day with your friend before they leave town or something. Toggle on the characters, play for a while, then switch them back off. Then when your friend leaves, get to unlocking.

It's pointless to force one way or the other. That's the issue. There's no reason people shouldn't be given the choice, because either way, a large group of people will be unhappy.

You get a character for every 10 minutes of playtime according to people who have the game. Thats 11 hours. I have finals the week after so this Friday night may be the only time I get to play with friends before Im booked for an entire week. There really should be an unlock all option.

Agreed. None of my friends play smash bros anymore and I hate generic online mode. If the single player is lame, the game has nothing to offer me. I made a mistake buying smash Wii U, and I wont repeat it with ultinate.

No, every character had two methods. Hundreds of multiplayer matches was the fallback if you couldn't do the primary merhod.

The problem is that unlocking content is not as fun when it's old content. And 90+% of this game is old content.

I don't mind unlocking the characters, but it's definitely not as charming as it was in Melee where almost every unlockable character was a newcomer.

Nah, according to people who already have the game, theres a 10 minute timer between every unlock if you decide to unlock characters by only playing matches. You can probably bypass it by restarting the game after every unlock but its still an annoyance.

I like unlocking characters and I have barely any knowledge of who is playable in the game, so hopefully will get some fun surprises
