Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey will help launch the world's first super-high definition 8K television channel on Saturday.

Japanese broadcaster NHK said it had asked Warner Bros to scan the original film negatives in 8K for its new channel.

Super-high definition 8K pictures offer 16 times the resolution of HD TV.

Great in theory, but you'd surely need a screen the size of your entire living room wall to get the benefit!

And the screen would have to be placed very far away.

I wonder when I'll stop being able to tell the difference, and when people who don't want to admit they need glasses will stop saying there's no difference.

But how can they show it in 8k when the footage shot isn't in 8k

Isn't that part of why 4k isn't mainstream yet? Because not everything broadcasts/streams in 4k?

The minimal resolution increase is offset by the massive black lines all over the picture.

It was shot on film, which doesn't have pixel resolution. Film is essentially "infinite" resolution in those terms.

Properly preserved old film can still be rescanned to levels of unique detail far in excess of current high def standards.

There's plenty more still to come from old movies.

It's not "infinite", I mean eventually you'd get down to atomic level of individual "pixels", but certainly there's plenty more unique detail beyond even 8K to be unearthed in old film.
