Rent control has been shown to be ineffective, and in fact to have the opposite effect instead of what it intends.

In fact most economists acknowledge this. Rent control is a dead concept peddled by leftists who literally don't know basic economics.

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-01-18/yup-rent-control-does-more-harm-than-good

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/12/business/economy/rent-control-explained.html

And yet economists from both the right and the left are in almost universal agreement that rent control makes housing problems worse in the long run.

All rent control actually accomplishes, is dividing rental units into "places you can't get" and "places you can't afford" without a hell of a lot in between.

Yeah rent control benefits few at the expense of the many in the long run.

Of course a lot of it comes down to what you think government should do and who it should benefit

You literally just made a topic complaining about open borders and saying housing wasn't a systemic issue even though it's clearly a problem of city level government regulation in the form of zoning

Try to be consistent in this shit at least

Immigration enforcement requires government and benefits a small number of people in a few small sectors of the labor force while harming the overall economy

Zoning and also requires government enforcement and violates basic property rights while benefiting land owners and current residents over potential new migrants. The only difference is the new migrants are more likely to be citizens. They're similar problems

How is saying those are good consistent with u saying that government is awesome when it doesn't do much to benefit people

Out of control immigration is bad for everyone.

What I said was that government ends up helping people more when it doesn't try to help them so much. Rent control is an example. Another example would be Obamacare which just ended up skyrocketing people's premiums. Or any other type of well-intentioned regulation that had a negative outcome.

None of that means that I want no government. Government exists for a purpose and I agree with it fulfilling its duties wrt national security, border control, private property rights, etc.

I mean is it tyrannical "in my favor" if it's doing what it was intended to do all along a la the Constitution and the general charter of the American government? Preservation of national security, border control, preserving individual rights including property rights, etc.

Immigration is harmless, in a vacuum.
Unfortunately, between a nigh welfare-state and being used as a means to undermine minimum wages (which is itself another flamewar), it's not a vacuum, particularly immigration of the "undocumented" kind.

Chain migration, however, is pretty much entirely harmless.

Right. Ultimately uncontrolled immigration benefits the politicians who promise to increase the welfare state, because they can import more voters and cement their own position.

Nothing tyrannical about acknowledging that and advocating for enforcing existing rules and being smart about how many people we let in, etc.

Rent control is one of the worst economic policies ever devised. If you want rents to be impossibly expensive to afford, especially for someone trying to relocate to a new area, then you should support rent control.

You should be able to set your own price.

When they realize waiters, garbagemen and hotel workers can't afford the rent, they will either lower it or they'll have to find rich people to work as garbage men. Or they'll drown in their own shit.
