When choosing a video game, TV show, book, or similar?

I personally dont think it matters too much so long as you enjoy whatever it is, even if its quality is poor per critics.

Furthermore, does a persons taste in media matter? Barring obviously repugnant proclivities, do you believe that the things people enjoy shape your perception of them as a person?

Not at all. Never read reviews

Really only for video games that I haven't already decided I'm gonna buy regardless and only really on a mechanic level. Like if it game is busted or overly repetitive oor something like that. And even then I only take it into account iif multiple reviews state the same thing.

I used to look at the scores to get a general idea which games were good, but thanks to the internet (youtube, forums, etc.) that is no longer necessary.

I tend to buy games independently of what critics say. Either Im interested and will buy it regardless, or I get interested due to what people say.

Yeah I kind think that accessibility to public opinion via the internet may kiiiiinda make critic reviews obsolete to an extent. In some cases anyway.

this, I pretty much already have a sense of what I do/don't like so a professional is only going to point out flaws I'm willing to ignore, or merits that I don't have much an appreciation for. Sometimes they point out stuff that I miss, which is what makes them entertaining.

For the second question, I don't see how people's taste in media would matter any more than the way their favorite color would matter.

Absolutely. But only very few of them. I always follow the assessments of The Prophet, Jim Sterling (my MASTER MIND) blindly, because he is always right and what comes out of his mouth is invariably The Absolute Truth, no matter what.

Sometimes the Giant Bomb crew too. But only when what they say has already been said by The Master Mind.

funny you should say this because i'd never watched him before and watched his DW9 video, and decided to not buy the game. totally forgot about that. i would say that means critic reviews do matter but to my knowledge he had the same opinion on the game as the average gamer.
