Traci Redford said she was boarding a Southwest Airlines flight home to El Paso, Texas, with her 5-year-old daughter when she overheard an airline employee mocking the little girls name, Abcde (pronounced ab-city). Now the airline has apologized to the mom and daughter in a public statement.

The airline employee does sound like a piece of shit for having a history of posting job stuff on social media, but lol come the fuck on don't name your kid a fake name if you don't want then to get made fun of. Also apparently "name-shaming" is a thing now ffs.

(Note, I say all this as someone who has dealt with having my last name made fun of through all of grade school that even persisted into my early adulthood for a few years.)

What Redford didnt find out until later, though, is that the unidentified employee also took a picture of the girls boarding pass and posted it on Facebook

But meaning is dictated by that language and meaning has an impact on society and the perception about you from others around you.

Naming someone like the first five letters of the alphabet is considered to be strange. It is not the same as a foreign kid whose name is foreign but has a meaning in that kid's native language and not the same in English or something.

Nowhere did I make an argument that the name wasn't strange. However, I don't view strange things as negative. Personally, I applaud originality over being conventional. I am obviously aware that naming your child something unique is likely to invite criticism and it is probably not the best idea to use your child's name as a canvas for your creativity. Nevertheless, I still think it is sad how people focus on anything that is different and immediately ridicule it. Normal names are only normal because you are familiar with them.

I Googled and from 2014 to now there has been like a few hundred baby girls named ABCDE. It is not going to be as common as you think for a while I would say.

I never said the name would be common. Less common names are actually better at performing their function. You are less likely to be confused with someone else having the same name.
