Then what was the point of this contest? We spend weeks voting for characters only for someone who wasn't even in the contest until the very end to win? Sounds anticlimactic to me.

It made the contest more fair. The 8 characters pulled out of the pool would have gotten there either way. So this gave the group of 8 something to compete against with interesting results. It also made the main bracket more open, since anyone in link/mario/samus etc.'s portion of the bracket would be losing automatically. This way less popular characters at least had the chance to make a run. And given that so far those characters are at the very worst getting 49.85% of the vote, they clearly would have still stomped the rest of the competition.

This is hardly new. As early as the fourth character battle, back in 2005, the top characters were removed from the main bracket and placed in a "Tournament of Champions". It's not exactly the same because that contest crowned a champion who then advanced to be the fourth character in that bracket while this one crowned eight division champions, but I'm fine with this result.

Besides, another Tournament of Champions would be downright comical. We've seen a past champion get utterly blown out. (We actually do have the right number of champions to do it, though. Even though Link won in the end in 2005 and 2006, both years had all past champions removed from the main bracket to guarantee a new champion, and since then we've had two upset winners, 2007 and 2013. So assuming that a past champion, most likely Link, wins again this year, we'd have 7 past champions and could have a three-round ToC with the new champion from CBXI.)

Link was always going to win it all and removing him gave us more fun matches to watch.

I never get people who think the only point of the contest is learn who the strongest char is.

We already know. It's Link. The competition for #2 is much more interesting, as well as other match-ups.

The point of the contest is fun.

Yeah, stuff like this let's us get the pleasant surprises of Alucard winning a division instead of just losing to Cloud in Round 2 and then Cloud beats Red in Round 3 and Cloud beats Kefka in Round 4, etc...
