Yeah but the site picked pikachu. Which is what everyone has complained about in the last few contests... I would say this is as clean a win as anything. I suspect Pokemon would have rallied harder if it had needed to. Cant say the same for mega man. Just doesnt seem to be the potential for it.

Well it's dead in that it has been defeated imo, but I don't think it can die in that it will still remain fairly powerful, and be noteworthy for what it has done. The history of it and its place in contest legend is never going away and should be celebrated/respected. But its status as an unbeatable block is gone. And I think for the better.

The Noble Nine "streak" was broken ages ago, the Noble Nine term is never going away until it stops being useful for communication.

No, it still hasn't ever been beaten. Noble nine characters have lost, yes, but not one has ever been beaten.

Also dead or not, it's far weaker than it used to be.

Sephiroth crushed Alucard with 73% in 2003.
Cloud will be lucky if he can score 60% on Alucard.

I have another excuse.

It wasn't an elimination match. Mega Man is still in this character battle, as is Pikachu. This poll was unlike any other in the history of the character battles in that the loser was not knocked out. Therefore, since MM is not dead in this contest, the N9's streak is not dead either.

The N9 can never "die". It's an exclusive club of those 9 characters

The streak, however, can. And it died when Crono lost to Missingno, by the standard definition

However there does remain a shadow of a doubt because under the original conditions under which the N9 was created (1v1, 24h and run under rules that had pure votals with no user bonus), they haven't lost.

So like, yeah. I guess. But it's kind of meaningless at this point.

That excuse can be valid if Mega Man wins the rematch. Then truly the first loss didn't count.

But really why would people want to asterisk the registered user bonus? I thought people wanted the GameFAQs userbase (rather than outsiders) to have direct control over the results.

There's a pretty big difference between the non-registered users who consistently come to browse the site and vote (which make up about half our overall voters) and 50000 people from reddit hopping on for a contest and then fucking off to Nowheresville when it's done.

Because it means that the result wasn't what it "should" have been.

Outside rallies have always been a thing; they just weren't enough to wildly swing matches because both sides would be rallying at similar strengths. Then L-Block and Missingno and Draven and Undertale happened. I feel like the anti-rally sentiments didn't really become vicious until Draven. L-Block was funny. Missingno, maybe less so. Draven was a true villain.

It could have happened today. The caveat is that MM would have won with no bonus. That can easily change in for example Snake/Zelda.
