I thought it was pretty amazing some 12-15 years ago, but I'd probably be too aware of the obvious budget saving tactics of the end to consider it the avant garde ending I held it up as.

End of Evangelion was my favorite part of the series, though I did think the actual TV series ending was kinda bad.
