No, it literally is that common. I would say at minimum 80% of the time an item won't scan, the customer will say that exact line. Probably higher than that, honestly.

I sympathise with retail workers but sometimes they're just being little bitches about it.

A walk through /r/talesfromretail will illuminate a whole social club of people who expect every person who walks into the store to immediately understand the way the business is run and not ask any questions.

When I worked McDonalds back in the day (dark years), I would always ask to be put in the kitchen as opposed to dealing with customers.

Manager kept telling me kitchen work is for those who barely speak English.
