oh, that's unfortunate! not because 1 + 2 are bad games (well, I don't like 2), but they're a bit of a departure from what the Ys games are now, and often aren't the first games eventual Ys fans play when they first start the series. it's kinda like starting Zelda with Adventures of Link.

i haven't played ys i/ii but the impression i get is that icon is right - they seem quite different than the ones i've played (napishtim/felghana/origins) and i've often only seen people recommend them to start with because "oh the lore is so important" which is... it's not really a plot-based series like that. but i haven't played them so my opinion doesn't really count. just as long as you know what to expect.

Oh ya ys 1+2 hopefully you enjoy it and play all the games in the series that's what happened to me although I started with the turbografix version

on the other hand tom does like weird relics of the past so maybe he'll get huge into the first two games and not really care for the rest.

actually you know what, this topic has inspired me to get ys i/ii myself. they did seem a bit outdated but i owe them a shot. i'll eventually play all the more modern ones too, just haven't gotten around to it yet. i don't think i/ii were on my wishlist so i didn't notice the massive sale.
