No flutes or any of that. The only break I gave myself was playing the All-Stars version for the save function.

My God was the second half of world 7 and all of world 8 rough. And the final airship stage was fucking BRUTAL.

If you don't count P-wings and clouds as legit items, I would definitely consider this the hardest of the classic 2D platformers (not counting extra levels).

I am proud of myself.

Onto the SNES games

Once I beat those I plan on doing a definitive ranking of the "classic" 2D platformers (Mario, Sonic, DKC).

Only beaten once, via the GBA version more than eight years ago.

However I like the TRG playthrough of the game. Would have to replay it to have much of an opinion on it.

Its been a super long time since I beat the game without skipping anything

actually, it was probably when I was a kid and it took several weeks (All stars)

and it was a family thing too, among the siblings

Yep, this took me a few weeks. Eventually had to settle for a world per night. Had to restart world 8 after dying on the final airship like 25 times.

Oh I also played on 2-player for the extra lives >_>

Limiting myself to the main console guys for now, lest I get burnt out by platformers. I'm skipping the 8-bit Sonics and Sonic CD for the same reason.

Have you played Sonic 1? I think that's harder. Unless you're only talking Mario.

I remember once playing SMB3 for an entire day as a kid, not skipping any worlds, trying to get to the end, but I gave up after I lost all my lives in one of the World 8 mini-fortresses and got sent back to level 8-1. When I finally went back and finished it years later (along with all of the other NES games that had frustrated my younger self), I found out that the Bowser's Castle area was right after that point.

In that one successful playthrough, I did end up skipping World 7, though. I was trying not to skip anything, but once I reached that world, I just didn't feel like dealing with it again.

I'm surprised by how difficult people are saying this game is, never really thought of it that way myself. Granted, I played it a lot as a kid, then later in life I went back and played it all the time when I was bored and needed to kill some time so eventually I had enough practice to make almost everything in it trivial, so maybe I'm not in the best place to judge since my memories of it are mainly from a time after I'd already gotten really good at it

Yeah, platformers get "easier" the more you play them, which is part of the beauty of them, but beating every level as a first timer is pretty tough in Mario 3. It's an excellently designed game.

Yeah in fairness world 7 and 8 have some stages that aren't trivial even when you have a decent bit of experience. That underwater auto-scrolling stage and the fast airship are pretty tricky. The game is in a good place difficulty-wise where it's not unreasonable for pretty much any player to beat it, but it's not easy enough to be dull even when you've played it a bunch

Sonic 1 is not harder unless you try for the Chaos Emeralds

Sonic 1 might have more "death traps" than your average Mario game, but I don't think it's necessarily harder than Mario 3 because of it.

Can't remember if I've beaten SMB3 in Super Mario All-Stars, but this year I decided to beat the GBA version after seeing some idiot teens (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrM4S-ZM1Y" data-time="
) fail in it. On my phone, no less! No matter if the emulation gives save states, it was hard to win it all.

For how much I love World, the one time I beat Bowser was using the Star Road shortcut. The game is so big, and some levels are just abusive.

I find it funny that when I was 10 I beat every stage in this game no problem but now at 38 years of age I do agree... it's f***ing hard as hell. Not sure how I ever did it as a kid.

I still play the game all the time on my GBA though. It's got one of the best NES Ending themes imo too.
