I was 14, and super excited to play Twilight Princess, the game that literally defined hype for me. For nearly two unbearably long years, I was hooked to any new info that was shown on Twilight Princess. The first trailer had me convinced that this was going to be the greatest game of all time.

Months before launch, I preordered Twilight Princess and the Wii with a $100 deposit at Toys R Us, with my own money I had been saving up.

A week before the launch, I had an operation on my foot, leaving me in a very sore, bandaged foot. On launch day, that didn't stop me from taking the bus downtown to the Toys R Us to stand outside for 30 minutes prior to opening. It was already lined. No big deal.

After the store opened, they announced it was "first come first serve". They refused to honour their preorders, and many people who got one that day didn't even have a preorder.

I didn't get a Wii or Twilight Princess that day. I never bought anything from Toys R Us again. Let them rot in hell.

The end.

Never played it again.

I have the Wii version. It was NZ$15 for Wii release, and about NZ$140 for the Gamecube release at the time, no way the game was worth that much. I enjoyed playing it.

I didnt know about the Wii or Twoligjt Princess until the day before it came out. I worked at Target and some friends from up the street were there. They asked if i was waiting for the Wii, I said I was working. But there was a list. I put my name on it, called some other friends, and I was like 10th in line, even though I was working. I called my mom that night, she brought me a chair and blanket. My friends were in line with me. We left and went to a diner for like an hour or two. Came back. Stood in line until my job opened. Got a Wii and Twilight Princess, which I didnt know of either even though Zelda is my favorite game series. It was nice. Though, definitely not my favorite Zelda game. Not even top 10, IIRC...

My then girlfriend now wife preordered the Gamecube version when it was announced for a birthday present and it kept getting delayed she was so upset because she knew I wanted it. Finally ended up getting both over time, and I actually prefer the Wii version.

To be fair, I could actually see it do decently.

It just can't do the same gigantic stores it used to. Instead, settling for store sizes maybe 1-2 typical restaurants in size, depending on the location. They can have a really big sign though.

There is probably some worth to continuing to sell video games, but they should only allot one isle to that (since just about everyone sells those anyway), and focus more on, well, toys.

Honestly, part of the reason it died market-wise is just down to kids wanting fewer physical toys these days. But the physical video game market was already napped up by places like Best Buy, dedicated video game stores, and even some more generic stores. Video games are also something that is easy to order online, since you can get a good idea of what they are like with just media and all (and nowadays you can also purchase them from the console stores and download them digitally as well).

All the while, Toys R Us didn't think that they needed to switch down to a smaller sized store. It was only a matter of time. That "leveraged takeover" or whatever was just the second cement shoe.

I was 16 when I got the Wii. It was maybe a year after it released. I pretty much got a job at a theme park just so I could buy one. I think my first game was super paper mario

Fun fact: the Wii and Wii U do not have "Nintendo" in the title. Most other systems are branded as "Nintendo 3DS," "Nintendo Switch," "Nintendo Gamecube," etc. But those two are officially just referred to as "Wii" or "Wii U."

I was working in Syracuse at the time. I remember my friends mentioning that they were pre-ordering it, but I was working on paying off my student loans so "disposable income" really wasn't a thing for me. I didn't get mine till around 2009. Still I enjoyed Twilight Princess, probably the last decent Zelda game until Link Between Worlds came out.
