Just happened to me a few hours ago. Soaked that tea for a good long 7 minutes, went to get the milk, had none left. I mixed a little bit of heavy whipping cream in instead, and... it wasn't bad. Didn't make as much beverage as I wanted but the taste was like a good boba milk tea (just without the boba).

Oh that sounds really good tbh, I definitely would have if I had any around. Once I had to use vanilla ice cream in a pinch, and it was actually super good and cooled off the tea to drinking temperature immediately

It's positively heartbreaking. I've only had to taste it once before becoming a bit more suspicious of the milk I keep on hand for tea. It always seems to go bad slightly before the sell by date.

I usually add the milk after the tea is done steeping. Even when you make something like a chai masala stovetop with whole ingredients, most recipes will have you add milk last, after removing the tea from the heat and separating it into the individual mugs.

oh wow i thought weevils just ate fruit or something. One time i opened a canister of powdered buttermilk (to make pancakes) but it was full of maggots :(

We do milk, open bag, pour leafs in the sugar bowl, hot water in the sugar bowl then spoon it into the cup that has milk

Not all tea is earl grey or lipton or whatever. Milk and/or sweeteners have shown up in a variety of tea traditions around the world. Some tea drinks, like chai (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masala_chai), are commonly served with both.

Other times you might add milk to dull a bitter aftertaste like in the case of English breakfast tea, add an a refreshing layer to the citrus in earl grey (related, the London Fog latte), or add a creamy density to the grassy warmth of macha green tea (admittedly not an Asian tea tradition).
