Seems like games tend to go one way or another.

You have games like Skyrim and Witcher 3, where even from a low level craftable items are much better than the stuff you find almost without exception. And then games like Diablo 3 where craftable gear is largely totally pointless and you're just waiting for the RNG gods to smile on you.

Neither, better gear should be a reward for gameplay or exploration

Of all the games I've played I reckon Final Fantasy X did it best.

You had generic craftable gear that slightly improved your stats for the most part. So you find a weapon and it has an empty slot and you can put an attribute in there to make it a bit better.

Then you had unique weapons that could only be won by doing difficult sidequests. These had unique attributes you couldn't craft onto ordinary weapons.

Then you had craftable gear that had lots of empty slots which you could customise into something monstrous, but only with a shitload of coin and time collecting unique items.

Either way each had a function that the other couldn't quite accomplish. That's how it should be I think.

ffx is the only game where crafting isnt 100% terrible. and its not great, just not the worst

Better drops. Crafting is almost always annoying.

Drops. Beating bosses feels more fun when they drop cool new gear and weapons.

If I had to pick... probably drops. Ideally, I think both should be useful.

Diablo II (the expansion, as the base game only has drops) does this fairly well (but certainly not perfectly). There are drops, crafts and Rune Words. Admittedly, Rune Words are very overpowered, but you can't get by with just them (as there are only RWs for weapons, body armor, helms and shields, and not rings, amulets, gloves, boots, belts and charms). Crafting is best for amulets and rings and occasionally good for gloves/boots/belts. Drops (particularly uniques) cover more or less everything (and indeed all components for crafts and RWs are drops).

Generally what happens is that you mix and match drops, crafts and RWs. All three can shine depending on the build/class.

D2 came to my mind. Crafting made playing Skyrim pointless.

As long as it isn't won via crazy-stupid "unfair" RNG, I don't care which it is.

Drops. You might be able to craft the best sword in the game but it's still not going to be as cool as the God Fucker 9000 you find.
