For irl and online (Arena)

I got into Arena a few weeks ago. I've gotten better at it definitely and have amassed a few decks I made myself (with help from mtggoldfish) that I can share if anyone wants to discuss decks. And I've done a fair amount of drafting (I stream on Twitch and my friend helps guide me through the draft and matches since I'm still figuring out how stuff works together somewhat, and have no idea what makes for a good draft).

My friend helped me draft a bunch of times in Dominaria since it's his favorite set available right now (he says he liked drafting it because it was flexible and you could do dumb things and get away with it. While Ravnica is "on rails"). Now that Ravnica is up for draft in Arena idk if we will draft anymore... I felt like I was learning a bit from his advice though.

I got good at the last one but I suck at the new one

drafting is by far the best way to play this game. but it has a pretty big learning curve, so too many people give up before they get the hang of it.

i would advise to keep drafting if you have the ingame currency for it. look up a spoiler and familiarize yourself with the Ravnica set, and look up what's been in the Ravnica draft meta both in Arena and in paper, if you wanna prepare yourself. if you do well, drafting is the most renewable way of unlocking packs in MTGA.

yeah I got like 40 dominaria packs from drafting off of the gems I got from that special $5 buy you can get one time when you start

Im finding GRN a lot harder to draft. I usually do p decent but sets that heavily incentivize multicolor fuck me up because I find it harder to splash a third color when you are super locked into certain combinations

I should look up more about the set specifically though. I just didnt have to with dominaria, it was very straight forward

People are upset but idgaf. It's a luxury item that no one needs, but people are upset that they are priced out.

screw that. give me more Shadowmoor. Hybrid mana is my favorite mechanic ever, and the little we get on Ravnica only makes me want more.

Ive just been hoarding my gold. My preference is to draft. I went into a Guilds of Ravnica draft blind and didnt do as well as I would have liked. Just havent had the motivation to do the prep work for success.

Havent crafted any cards either. I dont want to commit to anything.

oof, that's dumb yeah

especially since i imagine being a pro magic player isn't a very lucrative endeavor (you have to travel everywhere, you still have to buy the cards, etc)

Yeah my friend and I were drafting a lot of Dominaria. I actually went all of the way once (because of Navigator's Compass saving my ass last turn, lol), and had 6 wins another time. I'm using gems to do it. My daily coins were going to Ravnica packs. Since I haven't been buying games recently I'm alright with putting some money into the game.

I'm going to try to convince my friend to do the stream thing with me again.

fair. Ixalan didn't do it for you? The biggest issue with Return to Lorwyn is that there's literally no story left there. Makes it pretty low on the priority list =(

I played a few of the 360/PC games over the years, but I got really into the actual cards during and shortly after the Amonkhet block.

I had quite a few friends and family who played and I used to play against kids at the youth center I worked at, but I started beating them all so bad that they all refused to play with me anymore lol. Never bothered trying tournaments and now all my decks are out of standard, so they've just been sitting on a shelf for months.

If Magic Arena ever comes to consoles or mobile, I'll give that a go.

I do enjoy the tribes there, but it's not my favorite set of mechanics and I mostly haven't kept up with post-Origin standard very well as a whole

no such thing as a good green deck that works well in tournaments.

I dont really follow tournaments but mono-green seems like a casual stomper kind of deck (hence stompy)

unless the idea is basically just pick the best cards in each pack so you have spoils when the draft is done

When we were drafting Dominaria sometimes we would make picks for my collection, especially if I was splashing that color. You get what, 51 cards to draft? I might be wrong. Not every card you draft you want to play, and you can always afford to make selfish picks even considering the fact that you dont necessarily know what youre going for when you start the draft.

nah you definitely want to draft a good deck, because if you get enough wins you can get enough gems to keep drafting for free

just look up some youtube vids imo

My bad I miscounted. I thought it was 17 cards per pack instead of 15. Which still makes sense because I think you take about 17 land usually.

So that would mean you dont even play half the cards you draft because you take in a 40 card deck

This is Arena btw idk how it works in person because Im assuming you can pull basic and dual lands in physical format from packs.

I think there is a best of 3 draft mode though. Or maybe thats constructed. I dont have enough of a collection or game knowledge yet to do it even if its constructed yet

I have a mono blue tempo deck I win a lot of games with but theres some decks I just dont know how to answer

yeah, there is one best of 3 draft mode and one one-match draft mode. actually a good way to bolster your gem count if you want to keep doing the Competitive (best of 3) drafting mode but need more gems is to buy into the other draft mode that lets you buy-in with 5000 gold instead of gems, but still lets you win gems from. then take those gem winnings to buy into the best of 3 mode.
