I've been through a handful of pairs of shoes in the past year, all of them seem to wear out very fast, always near the ball of my foot. I cannot figure out why this has been happening, but it has been pretty consistent since I started walking 3 miles a day a few years ago.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Sounds like you carry most of your weight on the balls of your feet.

Try to spread it out and use your entire foot.

No, I have no idea what is going on. Obviously walking three miles a day has nothing to do with it, so I don't know what it could be!

If they're decent quality shoes (i.e., not from Walmart) and they keep wearing out in the same spot, you might want to see a podiatrist. You probably have a problem with your feet which might cause problems like foot, leg or back pain. A good custom orthotic insert might help.
