Finished Chapter 1. Kuze was hard. I don't think I have any idea of what I'm doing with this combat system but so far it's fun.

Two questions:

1. How much more should I fast track the main story so I can open up more side content? I can't seem to do much at the moment.

2. Is there a way to make the quickstep fighting style not suck?

Go up to when you can unlock the Real Estate/Host Club Management sidegames, they have very good bonuses and you can get some good moments out of them to boot.

I assume by Quickstep, you mean rush style? I found it to be pretty effective against bosses, but in reality, you can just stick to the style you are most comfortable with and it'll be enough to get through most content.

Majima's 4th style is something else though!

Yeah I just got to Chapter 3 and am playing as Majima. Should I take my time in this section and explore? Is Majima's items/money/missions ect. going to be completely separate from Kiryu's? Do I get to switch between them at will later or something?

The story alternates between perspectives every 2 chapters. Item/money wise they are almost entirely separate but you do get the (VERY limited) ability to transfer some things over eventually.

You don't get to switch between them at will until the final chapter.

Pretty sure you can transfer basically whatever you want by the final chapter if you're doing the specific side quest that involves transferring money. Even before that I think you can transfer items, including items that can be sold for decent money, though that's certainly not the most efficient way of transferring money just because you only have so many inventory spaces on your character to use to transfer them.

Basically just wanted to know if I should treat this as a diversion or an actual second character, thanks. Feels kind of weird because I was just getting used to Kiryu (first Yakuza game) but I'll adapt.

Nope, that sidequest caps your transfers until the final chapter (like in one chapter the most you can transfer is 100,000, then later on its 1 mil, etc). It's still nice, though. You can transfer the items but... yeah its not very time efficient at all, it's easier to just make the money you need on that character.

I've only played 0 myself but from what I understand basically every game has multiple playable characters. I think there's like 5 or so in one of them even?

Multiple characters is for 4, 5 and 0 and Kiwami 2.

Dead Souls as well but not a mainline game.

Rest is Kiryu only.

They're both main characters and the spotlight switches between them every two chapters.

One last question - do they have unique sidequests that are independent from one another? I don't want to start sidequests as Majima and 'steal' them from Kiryu, if that makes sense.

They each have their own set of quests that don't overlap.

Yeah there's no overlap at all for anything except records (like dance rankings, some (but not all) completion points, etc) IIRC
