Make no mistake, short of a George-Bush-in-2006-style implosion of Trump's popularity, the Democrats were never in serious contention to win the senate this election. That has nothing to do with their popularity and everything to do with the fact that they were defending three times as many seats as the Republicans were (26 to the Republicans' nine), including a slew in States that Trump won. To win the Senate, the Dems would have had to hold onto every single seat they already had, take Arizona and Nevada, plus win at least one seat in Texas, Mississippi, Wyoming, or Tennessee. That simply wasn't feasible, and all but the deluded acknowledged that a long time ago, even as far back as 2016 when people first started looking ahead to these midterms. In 2020, though? It's going to be the opposite trend. The Republicans will have to defend 20 seats and the Democrats 11 (2022 looks similarly friendly, with the Republicans defending 21 seats to the Dems 12). It's much more feasible to see a Democratic takeover - even acknowledging the structural imbalance favouring the Republicans in the Senate's composition - in one of those years. Make no mistake, short of a George-Bush-in-2006-style implosion of Trump's popularity, the Democrats were never in serious contention to win the senate this election. That has nothing to do with their popularity and everything to do with the fact that they were defending three times as many seats as the Republicans were (26 to the Republicans' nine), including a slew in States that Trump won. To win the Senate, the Dems would have had to hold onto every single seat they already had, take Arizona and Nevada, plus win at least one seat in Texas, Mississippi, Wyoming, or Tennessee. That simply wasn't feasible, and all but the deluded acknowledged that a long time ago, even as far back as 2016 when people first started looking ahead to these midterms. In 2020, though? It's going to be the opposite trend. The Republicans will have to defend 20 seats and the Democrats 11 (2022 looks similarly friendly, with the Republicans defending 21 seats to the Dems 12).
