Honestly, it is impressive how bad the dialogue and story were botched in base D3. Reaper did a fantastic job making Act V feel a little more authentic while still being part of D3.

Some (most) of D3s narrative choices and voice lines still irritate the hell out of me six years later.

Probably my favorite line in the game, aside from some Barbarian lines.

The only problem I have with D3's story is how Deckard Cain is unceremoniously killed by a joke tier miniboss. That was fucking bullshit.

Everything else was pretty good I thought.

I hope there's a happy ending somewhere for Leah in Diablo 4

Honestly Diablo has the strongest story and most interesting lore out of all the Blizzard games which have been totally fucked by now into things that make no sense.

I always felt whoever was doing the writing on D3 just entirely did not understand what made D1 and D2 work.

I never wanted a front row seat to the Eternal Conflict. I especially never wanted to be viewed as more powerful than either side. Diablo is at its best when youre just a dude in a world trapped between these two unfathomable forces, an insect trying to topple gods.

The Soulsborne games feel much more true to Diablo for me the world is already in the throes of the apocalypse and the main powers that be dont really give a shit that you even exist. The impossible odds.

^And the above is just the broad stroke stuff, to say nothing of the hilariously bad shit like Cain being killed by a Power Rangers villain and Belial, literal Lord of Lies, being the most transparently awful liar ever

While Im ranting to myself

1) I have no idea how some of this stuff made it through a rough draft... like, Leah saying it was all just stories. My uncle saw what he wanted to see to a literal angel like three hours after she watched him be killed by a demonic butterfly serving a Lord of Hell. What?

2) More of a nitpick but Ive never understood why they made Butcher the A1 boss instead of Leoric. The whole act is about Leoric, then you make your way through his mansion and torture chambers to find... a butterfly and the Butcher yelling about vegetables. It wouldve made a ton more sense to put Leoric there, and have the Butcher ambush you in the Cathedral. You know, where he belonged.

Let's all just be honest for a minute; writing was never, ever Diablo's strong suit. I mean, hell, the title character and his comrades basically had their names drawn from a mythology hat. It was fun and cool in a 'aesthetics over substance', cartoony sort of way, but what we loved was the gameplay and that's fine.

Because The Butcher was a legendary figure in the series. He struck fear into the hearts of all new players in D1 (seriously, his room). Having said that, what they did to him in D3 is a travesty.

I loved the writing in D1 and D2, so no.

Or maybe less writing than ambience but the story and cutscenes in D2 were infinitely better.

Yeah, exactly. The atmosphere and ambience is fun, but the actual writing is not exactly Shakespeare.

Sure but still by that measure, the first two games did a far better job.

Mariuss story is 9000x more unsettling and compelling than Leahs.

Oh sure, I'm just saying it was never the strong suit of the series. We love the cheesy, over the top cinematics and the cartoony characters and the amazing gameplay, but the characters always sounded like they were written as a video game.

I think we still disagree just a hair. Stuff like this MADE Diablo for me. Its a little cheesy now mostly just by virtue of being 20 years old and pretty dated, but its still excellent for my money.

Sure, it was never Shakespeare but that doesnt mean it wasnt a shit ton better written than D3.

Just finished Act 3 and man, six years later the missed potential of the base game still gets under my skin.

The in-game cutscenes are just... really bad. Every single one of them, whether its as introducing a boss (with a lame one-liner every time) or as crucial as Leahs possession or Cains death. The latter is especially criminal theres just no gravity to the scenes at all.

What sucks is that the Prime Evil concept is kinda neat and the Act 3 cinematic really set up Azmodan well, but then Diablo/Azmodan are so cartoony all throughout their acts... blech.
