The reported evidence indicates that higher levels of economic development and gender equality favor the manifestation of gender differences in preferences across countries. Our results highlight the critical role of availability of material and social resources, as well as gender-equal access to these resources, in facilitating the independent formation and expression of gender-specific preferences.

It means that boys like to drive blue cars and girls like to drive pink cars, only our manufacturing has existed for so long that we can't cater to women and their pink cars cause all we've got is blue metal. if people have more freedom to choose for themselves, the gender gaps tend to increase.

for example, if the only viable option to get a good salary or social standing is to become an engineer, men and women will both try to become engineers roughly equally.

but if all different careers get enough to live on, women go for stereotypically feminine careers like daycares and nurses, and men go for stereotypically male careers like factories and house building to a mich higher extent.

this is of course assuming that there is enough equality that women are even allowed to pick jobs themselves to begin with.
