Do you believe we will ever reach a point where you can truly place faith in an automated car to reliably and safely transport you to your destination?

Yes. Self-driving cars will be one of the greatest milestones in the future. People are afraid of dying due to self-driving car errors but factually, in the last two years, there have been 3 deaths due to self-driving cars. Nearly 100 motor vehicle deaths occur everyday in the US due to human error.

Self-driving cars will promote faster traffic, safer driving, and you can sleep/work while your car drives you to your location.

The only worry is that self-driving cars could be hacked. Even if one went rogue, I'm sure companies and manufacturers would be able to implement a manual, non-electronic way to break out of the car or stop it.

How will they ever drive on completely snowpacked dirt roads, with patches of ice, in a blinding snowstorm, going around tight turns with no guard rail?

That was literally my commute for 6 winters. Whenever people mention snow they're always like "lol don't worry here's a photo of a beautifully plowed road down main street america". That's not snow driving. Encountering a 2ft pile of slush in the middle of the unmarked road is snow driving.

Lol @ the trust them more than humans posts

I've seen more than my fair share of mind-numbingly stupid drivers, but how much do you trust yourself because hop in one now and unless it's sunny or just light rain, enjoy having a solo accident driving off the side of the road. Or in Uber's case, right into a pedestrian on an open road. MCity has been awfully quiet the last couple of years about automated cars driving in light snow

Obviously the automated cars are safer when you have the ideal conditions that they are tested in compared to humans in those same conditions

Too bad that doesn't apply actual driving in most areas of the world. You plan on moving Bay Area/Southern California, the Southwest US, or Florida with the rest of that "trust more than human drivers" camp? Because if you wait less than month and go anywhere north of the Kentucky border even with the state of the art automated car, I am fairly confident you are going to end up in a hospital or a grave without needing the help of some idiot driver in another car.

Or even come to DC metro area since they don't believe in street lighting outside of downtown or visible lane dividers when it's raining, leaving the highway as just one large very reflective blacktop in the middle of a swamp that tends to flood a lot in the summer. Haven't heard much about automated cars operating in that weather condition either.

Self-driving cars are probably nice and all, but I enjoy driving a car, so I don't see myself using the function unless I'm feeling ill or fatigued and don't trust myself to drive properly. Besides, I'm sure I have to remain vigilant anyhow in case the autopilot malfunctions.

once self-driving cares are on the road in decent capacity, your insurance for "preferring" to drive a car (and therefore increasing the likelihood of an accident by like 1,000%) will go through the roof.

people being reluctant to trust self-driving cars.

As with everything, it's mostly people trying to sound like they have a better reason than they do.

There's nothing wrong with just liking to control the car yourself. I mean other than having the most masochistic hobby ever. But being a masochist is perfectly legal.

Like me, for example. I've argued the safety angle and while self-driving cars surpassing humans in safety is an inevitability that's really not why I care. It just sounds better than driving pisses me the hell off and I want a machine to do it instead.

But in reality, there's nothing wrong with that either.

Nah I doubt it. Human drivers won't have more collisions because of self-driving cars. They really should have less. The cost to insurance companies cuts greatly and basic microeconomics drives autocar rates down. Worst case, rates for human drivers stay roughly the same.
