Tattoos and piercings are a lot more accepted and manageable than full on make up and mohawks etc. Adn I'm mostly talking about good paying jobs. Not Walmart, Target, Hot Topic etc.

Emo and scene shit was always lame. It was just a sad attempt to try and copy the punk and metal image but without any of the meaning behind it.

Goths are still around, in the same capacity as theyve been for at least the past 15 years.

Emos are around too. Theres just a lot less of them. My Chemical Romance breaking up definitely led to a lot of them moving on, plus a lot of the other popular emo bands either broke up or changed their image and music. Theres still a bunch of them though, especially in the UK. Aside from the mid-2000s emo sound and look continuing on, theres emo rap now which is somewhat popular (or was, before Lil Peep died), and a new wave of dedicated MCR fans that are mostly 12-14 year olds who for some inexplicable reason believe that the band will make a comeback any time now. And post-hardcore is still doing fine (a lot of it is basically emo music).

Now that Warped Tour has had its final run, it remains to be seen how emo will survive. The emo look is pretty dead though. I miss it, and the scene kid look too. That was a fun time.

I feel like goths have had more longevity because goth music spans many genres (rock, punk, pop, electronic, metal, etc.) and even the goth look has variations (pastel goth, cybergoth, health goth). Emo is significantly more limited, plus its very much a youth cultural thing. Its acceptable to be a goth in your 40s. No 40 year old identifies as emo.

While goth is still around, and I agree w/the guy above me who aptly put that it is in the same capacity it has always been, I do feel that this is its extinction phase.

Emo rap actually seems to have some pretty solid traction in some underground sectors. But Lil Peep dying was a big blow from what I can tell, and as other people have said already. XXXtentacion also had a solid portion of his musical sensibilities derived from classic emo...of course, he is also dead now. Emo rocks been dead though. A lot of it (on the rock side) also tied into early-mid 2000s fashions. Which have been extinct for a while.

My understanding of hipster is a dad that sneaks off and catches up on new media and pretends he likes it so his kids and others will see him as cool.

I see a lot of chicks I consider alternative which seens like the modern iteration of goth/emo/scene. Most of these girls are barely even different then than your average girl with their music except they have nose rings, wear dark lipstick, and usually dye their hair and wear dark clothing.

A hipster is someone who obsesses over originality, authenticity, and "doing it before it was cool". In the early 2010s they were people who dressed in flannel and suspenders with undercuts and big beards and wore large black framed glasses. Now that each of these things are just "being trendy and modern", the definition loses a lot of ground. Still however, the hipster ideology remains, and they take this aesthetic further by being "ironic" and/or "vintage". Stuff like buying vinyl, playing banjos, dressing like a doctor from the late 19th century who administers everyone cocaine, etc.

It was a nebulous term to begin with so it's not a big deal if you call a dude who looks like a lumberjack and listens to indie rock a hipster.

Well I had also heard people say that it isn't DOING those things that's hipster. Supposedly it has to do with if you're doing it for that image rather than you just doing it. Something about giving a shit about how other people see you or somethin'.

I think the argument about what exactly hipsters are is about as old as the term. It was mainly a term used to deride and demean people not in the status quo at the most basic level.

Goth hipster. Emo hipster. Whatever hipster.
