It is just the same thing every year. When is the meta going to change? When is basketball team going to be like "So yeah this year we just got a bunch of fast dudes that only dunk the ball. Shooting the ball is out of meta and too much counterplay". Or a Baseball team is like "We are going to just bunt the ball and focusing on stealing bases, hitting the ball has too much counterplay"

So boring.

The meta has actually changed pretty significantly in those sports over just the past decade with an increased emphasis on analytics. Basketball teams are increasingly looking for versatile players who can cover multiple positions, and on offense are shooting more threes than ever before.

In baseball, meanwhile, hitters are increasingly looking to get deep in counts and to hit fly balls, with a reduced emphasis on starting pitchers going deep in games.

Seriously, it changes all the time.

Consider the NFL used to of feature significantly less passing and more use of tailbacks and fullbacks and "pro style" I formation sets.

That is not the case now. This has happened just over the past 10 years or so.

A lot of teams do not even keep fullbacks on the team now.

***

NBA basketball has seen a major emphasis on the three ball the past few years. See the Warriors. Basketball used to feature an emphasis on big 5 centers and post up style offenses and/or triangle.

***

Baseball, especially since the end of the juice era, features a lot of small ball. Base stealing and high WAR/Exotic stat guys matter now more than just straight up RBI/HR dudes.

***

NHL is vastly different too. Remember the New Jersey trap era? We don't have that now. Game has changed a lot since the last strike.

Clutch and grab bro

Booby Holick is going to wreck you. No two line passes for you! dump that puck in, Marty stand a million miles from the goal and just flips the rubber out. LOL, you aren't gonna score, enjoy 1 to nothing. Or the ever classic 0-0 tie!

Watch Jaromir Jagr skate into the zone with three dudes hanging off his mullet, and somehow shoot the puck on net!

I just don't get why nobody in Football says "Well we are just getting big people to be immobile tanks and concentrate on passes, runnin has too much counterplay". Or nobody in Volleyball says "We only focus on tall people with long arms so we can picket the net, trying to run to the ball has too much counterplay"

Because the former could be countered by just dropping more defensive players into coverage

I would actually watch baseball and soccer if they did this. But they would have to be totally smashed. So drunk they would be kicking other players and the number of hit batters would skyrocket drunk.

That is not right. Home runs are at all time highs. Everyone is swinging for the fences. Small ball took a hit with analytics after the juiced era. OBP was king and teams started to realize that stealing was only worth it at a certain rate and giving up outs to move runners was a bad idea.

But yes, OP is wrong. Rules changes and analytics change sports strategies all the time

To be fair, this whole "swing for the fences" thing mainly took off because defenses started shifting on pull hitters. When players who used to get line-drive singles and doubles all the time were instead grounding out to a defense stacking 3-4 infielders on one side and hitting barely over .200, they decided to beat the shift by hitting the ball where no one could catch it: over the fence. As a result, home runs, walks, and strikeouts are up league-wide, while hits that aren't home runs are down league-wide.

Absolutely agreed. Watch an NHL game from Wayne Gretzky's time, and then watch one now. Watch an NFL game from the days of the Steel Curtain defense, and then watch one now. Watch an NBA game from the era of Bill Russell's Celtics, then watch one now. It's like night and day.

Yeah, but imagine...
Coach: The pitcher is fucking drunk! DO. NOT. SWING!
*Batter swings anyway and the bat slips out and nails the shortstop*

Or base runners would be tripping trying to get to the next base lol.

Then we should, like, take the soccer teams and like, have them play ice hockey in like, soccer cleats.

I just don't understand why tennis doesn't just go "We are aiming for more players who excel with hitting the ball with the rim of the racket, it gives more power and hitting normally has too much counterplay." Or why rugby players dont just quit because their sport sucks, like "rugby sucks and quitting has no counterplay"

Because there's always ananswer for the big immobile tanks.

One team isn't magically gonna have a bunch of immobile tanks that just aren't able to be outrun/out hit. It's just not going to happen.
