No. Overwatch takes place in our universe. StarCraft is a completely different one. It's more like Warhammer 40k but splashed with a little BSG.

So Athena is based off the adjutant since Starcraft is a game in overwatch world. I hope DVA fangirls over her since DVA loves SC.

I have the limited edition with the companion art book. Her bio mentions absolutely nothing about StarCraft. Furthermore, it says she was drafted into MEKA because of her skills in gaming. This makes it exceedingly likely she was a champion in some kind of first person shooter. I doubt MEKA pilots would be chosen for their skill at omniscient strategy games.

She is probably featured around StarCraft promotional stuff because she's Korean and StarCraft is basically Korea's National sport at this point.

There's no "misconception" about that whatsoever; there is a pretty audacious (and by now, entirely expected) degree of BS from Blizzard regarding this, however.

For example, from Blizzard themselves in 2016:

That's pretty straightforward.

I also remember reading that she was pro Starcraft player and I don't believe it was in HOTS.

Huh. That's interesting. It's not in the artbook at all.

Edit: oh, I just realized she's not actually part of overwatch either. MEKA is a totally separate thing. Seems like this blurb here is bunk from before the story/lore was fully fleshed out.
