Three Kansas militia members who were convicted of plotting to bomb the mosque and homes of Somali immigrants should be granted leniency in their sentencing because they were inspired by President Donald Trumps rhetoric encouraging violence, lawyers for the men said in court documents.

The defense lawyers, in filings made in federal court in Kansas, said the court had to acknowledge Trumps rough-and-tumble verbal pummeling in the 2016 election campaign that heightened the rhetorical stakes for people of all political persuasions.

One of the lawyers said that Trump continued to stoke Islamophobia.

Huh

So now "because Trump said so" is being used as a legal defense. I wonder how that will turn out.

I'm sure they were inspired by trump. but at the end of the day, you're responsible for your own actions unless you're under duress, which they were not. and also no amount of rhetoric can make you do or plan to do something that is out of your character. if you plan to or do something horrible, it's not because someone encouraged you. it's because you were a piece of shit to begin with

Everyone is held to the same standard. Nobody has control over how anyone pays attention to them or interprets their words. I dont think anyone would defend Trump as a well spoken person, but has not actually encouraged violence and anyone who says as much is just following the same tired narrative.

If we had a couple more Bernie shooters, Im sure the same people flocking to these articles wouldnt suddenly be saying Bernie is advocating murder.

Now, doesn't put him in direct blame of what happened as personal responsibility etc. But he's stoked the fires of hate and made violence seem like the right and good thing to do.

You know in that recent spider man game there's a villain who convinces her fans to go out and commit crimes so she can get views on Twitch, when Spider Man finally stops her, she spouts off to the cops that they have nothing on her because technically she didn't do anything wrong, her fans did and the cops actually say that she's right...come a few levels later the charges against her were dropped and she went right back to getting her fans to commit crimes for her fucking twitch account. That feels a whole lot of what I'm seeing with Trump's retoric and what's worse is that he clearly made good on his threat to "Turn it up" so to speak Trump wants this, the GOP wants this because it's endless voting fuel

And the only reason he was imprisoned for life is because he wasn't wa government official let alone one with tons and tons of protective measures set in place to keep him away from a jail cell.
