None of the characters are particularly likable.

Sadie is alright

Its not even realism tho, its just selective inconvenience. I can only carry a stick and a nerf gun, but my HORSE gets the bottomless weapon cache of past games? Why? Why cant I iust have everything at my disposal? Why is there a middle man for the suspension of my disbelief?

This is why John Marston remains their best protagonist. He could be a jerk, but his reasons for it were clearly laid out to the player in a way that made you sympathetic to him, and he frequently displayed compassion and empathy for the other people you encountered, despite them often being self-centered filth and despite his knowing their true nature.

Yeah John Marshton was great. RDR is the only Rockstar game I've ever beaten and also the only one I've ever liked.

Are the characters really just unlikable? Grand Theft Auto V was a huge disappointment with that being a major part of it. Trevor wasn't cool or badass, he was just an annoying dickhead. Michael was alright, but kind of a bitch ass. Franklin was just meh. Not even the supporting characters were endearing or interesting. I know a lot of people hate on IV and Niko, but I really liked him and his pals. Packy was a prick, but he was an entertaining prick that got some depth to him. Jacob was a cool bro. Roman had tons of character. Brucie was just great for a GTA game.

Marston was pretty damn cool in RDR though. He was rough, badass, but also occasionally funny and he just fit. Plus guys like Irish and the snake oil salesmen weren't good people, but they were fun.

It's a fine line, but I just felt V fell off it. The PS2 era GTAs were full of caricatures and they fit the over the top world of the game. I'm down for a more realistic setting, but you can't lose that sense of fun. Rockstar's no Naughty Dog when it comes to story or characters.

They're unlikable in the since that there's just nothing there to like.

The only standout characters are the ones from RDR1, and it isn't even that they are so much good it's just that you remember them from RDR1. And Javier doesn't even benefit from that he's so fucking boring in this game.

Hell, I've been playing for 30 hours now and the only new character names I can remember are Lenny (only because you spend a whole mission literally SAYING his name and he's the token black guy), Sadie (cause she's the one girl that actually does anything) and Micah because he's the wild card crazy person who I am assuming is going to be end up being the classic ally that betrays you in every single Rockstar game

The rest are just kind of there to be their "thing". I could probably get their names if I think really hard about it, but there isn't much that stands out other than one guy is a half black/half native american tracker and the other guy is Irish, and the second in command (Hosea, I remember his name too) is the trickster con artist.

I started the game, already really tired of trudging through the snow....

Also, the stamina/eating food system has the potential to be really annoying it seems.

Honestly, I never even paid attention to it until Chapter 3 and it didn't really fuck me over.

Hell, I never cleaned my guns until Chapter 3. I honestly thought nothing would happen but I think I *just* finally had a gun jam on me during a shoot out.

The story isn't that good.

I honestly feel the game *itself* could be fun, but I don't think we are going to see that until Red Dead Online comes out to be completely honest.

The lack of Leslie Benzies is being felt with this. This is Dan Houser with absolutely nobody reigning him in and quite honestly I'm getting a real MGSV feeling from this. It's not that the game is "bad", but everything about it is held back in service to a writer who is way too full of himself.

I'm around 25-35 hours in. I'm in the middle of Chapter 3. The story has gone nowhere. Every single thing is just sort of a "day in the life" situation for Arthur Morgan and the gang. There's nothing compelling me to really go on, there's no central goal outside of just (at this point) fucking over some plantation owners cause Dutch's dad died in the civil war.

I feel like Dan Houser was going for some epic here, and it is falling flat between the boring ensemble cast and the go nowhere goals of the gang.

And even the parts that *should* be fun, like the train robberies, are so overly linear that they end up being boring. I remember they hyped these jobs up as being similar to the heists in GTA V, but those look absolutely open ended compared to what I've seen in RDR2. The second train robbery literally consists of you just holding up and pressing B to beat passengers when prompted, for probably a good five minutes, and then you get into a fist fight and then a shoot out with some lawmen at the end

It's like, yeah, it has a little box in the top left corner that tells you the "take" like the heists in GTA V, but other than that they are just glorified cutscenes followed by a small shootout.

I think Im enjoying the game so far... but too many tiny things seem so tedious to me. Simple shit like opening the compendium, looting bodies, and searching drawers. Its just so damn slow.

The bounty system is completely broken. I still have a $180 bounty in the first town after accidentally bumping into a pedestrian and defending myself.

Having to take my weapons from my horse and re-equip after every mission is a pain in the ass.

Only being able to carry one large animal at once is tedious.

The hunger system isnt as limiting as I though it would be but still doesnt really add anything.

Me? I was fairly hyped.

But I'm not going to delude myself into believe this is good when it's such a mixed fucking bag.

Maybe it's easier, cause I always told myself that this game was going to be the barometer for how Rockstar Games would be going forward without Leslie Benzies.

And unfortunately, it's not looking too good. Not like "Rockstar Games are going to suck" not good, but like...it's the end of an era not good.

Maybe I'm still not far enough to see it. I literally just completed the mission where Jack gets kidnapped and I'm finally starting to see something worthwhile.

It still says a lot that it took 30 hours to get to it.
