Physical games.

It was all basically to keep up with the competition. When Best Buy killed GCU, you saw how quickly Amazon followed suit.

Of course, you just need to wait a while then everything costs like $30.

Pick one. Sure, waiting a while is the best way to save money on games, especially when you add sales into the mix, but that's really not the question that was asked.

Depends on how niche the game is I suppose.
I think the last game I bought physically at full release price was Civ VI dx.

The question was new games. Could mean new as in unused or new as in recent releases. I mean it's still new if the price drops 50% in 2 months. That's why my backlog is kinda saving me money, something to play while waiting.

But it's obvious that games go on sale eventually. No one would ask such a question.

It's pretty strongly implied by the fact that it's a question in the first place that he's talking about recent releases, since it's not remotely difficult to find unused copies of older games on sale, and the Best Buy and Amazon programs he's talking about are specifically for new releases.

Eh, that's debatable. If nothing else, games that drop in price that quickly tend to be games that haven't done very well, for whatever reason.

I was too smart to fall for those programs. So without those your best bet is to wait it out. Sometimes the obvious answers get overlooked.

Not really. A couple months is the average for non-Nin games. I mean I'm expecting a good price next month for Tomb Raider and Spiderman. May be too soon for RDR2, Soulcal 6, or AC Odyssey. Ya never know.

I heard they were strong armed into canceling them, and some companies wouldn't even ship them the games because of it.

Best bet if you want it cheaper is digital copies now, usually for PC (green man gaming etc), but then you run the risk of bad ports or tons of bugs at first.......so the really best bet is to just wait a bit.

Btw, did I miss the fall Steam sale somehow? I mean fall is almost over, and I don't remember having one.

We're a little over one month into fall. The Steam sale typically falls around Black Friday.

It's not really a matter of being smart or not. It's a matter of taking advantage of those programs to buy a game you plan on buying at release anyway.

Really? Always figured it worked like the stores buy the copies from the publisher and then the store finds a way to sell their copies. Some used to offer coupons, there's always B2G1's, stuff like that. Pub's shouldn't care, a sale is a sale no?

Enh, people still call the PS+ offerings 'free' when they technically aren't. Those programs cost too much for a minor benefit. You'd save what, $6 or $12 at best on a game? I laugh at Amazon for charging $100+ for "free shipping" when I can wait a couple days and get free shipping without the extra charge.

I don't think the ability to play online or getting access to dozens of games a year is minor.

You're generalizing and lumping all reward programs together. Some are not worth the cost; Amazon seems to be slashing benefits and raising prices every day. But Best Buy's Gamers Club Unlocked was a phenomenal value. $15 a year for extra game trade-in value, and 20 percent off ALL new games. That's "new" as in not used; any new copy of a game was discounted, even if it was already on sale. The service paid for itself in no time flat.

Oh, um, Plus isn't the same. Just an example how people misread the program when it claims 'free'. The monthly games could be better though.

I don't trade games. Paying for discounts seems silly. In order to reap any benefits I'd have to buy too many new games at full price. BB doesn't even have a good selection. Oh they'll have countless copies of sports and shooters. Ask for a platformer or a puzzle and the blue goons go derp like the ghosts in Pacman.

I just explained otherwise. If you buy $75 worth of games in a year, regardless of release date, it's already paid for itself.

And I've never had a problem with games being in stock. Except with Vita games, and that's to be expected.

E3 usually has something every year. Amazon flaked this time, but Walmart and BB didn't. I pre-ordered a bunch of stuff and got 30% off a bunch of games.

Just updated my site and I bought over 70 games in one year. Do the math though, you're paying a ton of money to save $12 on a game (at 20% off). $48 a game plus the fees isn't good compared to the $30-$35 cap I try to stay at. Not to mention being locked to one store.

Stock can vary I suppose. If you see my games in the collection topic, much of it isn't the kind of stuff BB would ever hear about. Only store with a Vita section is GS.

You're not "locked" anywhere, either. If you want to buy somewhere else, then do it.

The whatever it costs for the program.

You might feel guilty not using your 'discount'.

The whole point of these things is to save money. If you can save more elsewhere, then go for it.

An exception would be for store-exclusive content, like preorder bonuses. Case in point, I was trying to decide whether to buy Kingdom Hearts III at Best Buy with my discount, or at Gamestop with the bonus poster. I took a look at the poster, didn't like it, and decided to save myself an extra $16 at Best Buy. (And in this example waiting to save money is not an option for me. There's no way I'm not getting Kingdom Hearts III on release day.)

Actually I forgot that Kingdom Hearts preorder comes with a $10 bonus, so that's $26 saved. Hell, I'm paying less for the special edition than others are for the regular version.
