I was incorrect in that, as the last time I really tried to use Wikipedia as a source that was the case. It's changed since then, it seems, and that makes it even less credible.

Of fucking course you wouldn't in an academic setting. Here it's informal so it's ok, but if you're being this petty about it, there was a source from a news site which stated the same thing that Wikipedia said.

Why not use that news site then?

It's pretty tough to parse through fake news in hot button political issues. A lot of organizations still cite the southern poverty law center even though they've been outed as an extremist group pushing a false narrative

Could you source/cite this please? Last I checked SPLC was not classified as an "extremist" group...

Regardless of any other aspects of the Proud Boys, in this case, it seems to be true that they did not start the fight and they weren't prowling around looking for a fight. For additional context:

- Prior to the event, a Republican headquarters was vandalized and threatening messages regarding the event were left at the scene.

- 3 Antifa protestors were arrested for assaulting and robbing a man who had left the event separately from the Proud Boys group.

- Antifa protestors instigated the fight by throwing objects at the Proud Boys (at least one bottle that I know of).

With that in mind, the Proud Boys were probably technically justified in responding violently to the antagonism. However, I think they lose the claim to self defense after they responded with such overwhelming force and continued to stomp and kick on the Antifa protestors after they had been defeated.

For what it's worth, apparently McGinnes has urged the Proud Boys involved to turn themselves in to police. As I've heard it, none of the Proud Boys were arrested at the scene because the Antifa protestors refused to cooperate with the police.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter who started it, these groups are extreme and what they're doing is wrong.

What's the problemo? It's video evidence that Antifa started the brawl. I know all the left-wingers were pretty adamant that the Proud Boys started the brawl but now's the time to face facts, accept you were wrong, and move on.

When the crips use savagery to fend off an attack from the bloods we don't pat them on the back for their efforts either. Don't know why you're sitting here and picking sides in what's essentially a street brawl between two different gangs.

Because in America the side who started the violence is in the wrong, and the defending party is doing just that.
Self defense

There is a huge problem with this logic. There's no way to interpret it other than "one guy throws a bottle. Therefore the entire opposing crew has license to use any degree of violence against him and anyone in his crew justifiably and with any degree of force they choose because now it's self defense."

How else are we to interpret you on this? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you aren't truly preaching that extreme of a point, but if you were, I must say that I would be ashamed to know anyone who legitimately felt that was a reasonable defense... and I say that before taking into consideration the hypocrisy of the condemnation of antifa and their defenders for doing exactly the same thing and attempting to use that same justification.

Because in America, violence is violence and there is a reason that we have excessive force laws, as the arrests of proud boys here exemplify, and to further drive that home, let's think about people who have gone to prison for shooting others dead in "self defense" in stand your ground states.

So do you have no legs to stand on in this argument or did you perhaps word your point recklessly and would like to clarify?

As a resident of Florida and someone who grew up there, I vehemently support stand your ground laws.

It's hard to talk about on GameFAQs because I've been modded multiple times for discussing open carry and my intentions toward people who might invade my space physically, but I used to be a lot softer on physical altercation and appropriate punishment.

Back in February I was walking at night and was mugged by two men who beat me in the face with a handgun. I had to have half of my face reconstructed and it really messed my life up for a minute, all over a minuscule amount of money that for all they knew I may not even have in my pockets.
And maybe for people who haven't experienced real violence they don't get it, they look at fights like they see in movies or something, but even something that seems minor can be entirely life altering and ruin someone forever.

I wouldn't go out at night in most areas of town anymore without a concealed weapon, and I'll much sooner draw with the intent of firing than allow someone to get into my personal space. It's that reasoning that I understand why Trayvon Martin was shot and why Zimmerman was acquitted. I genuinely feel, and it may be an unpopular opinion, that he didn't have a choice in the situation, regardless of the fact that I feel he escalated the situation unnecessarily. If he didn't escalate it into violence, then I feel he was in the right.

Y'all might grill me for that, but come back after you've been beaten half to death with a weapon and tell me you're willing to take a chance on levels of escalation in violence. There's a surefire way to never have me draw on you, and that's to never put your hands on me. I'm a rational human being, and I would never put my hands on someone even if I vehemently disagreed with them. That's just common decency.

Only speaking for myself and my posts here. The topic creator and I have some history. I wasn't aware of his political views until this morning, at least not that I can recall. Due to that history, I'm inclined to regard him not as a troll but as someone I regularly interacted with in non-political context and outside of CE, and I'm also inclined to argue in good faith as opposed to using my default "vs. usual suspects" tactics. To reiterate though, that's just me.
