Watched it at my friends house and man I was laughing a lot more than I expected. The scene with the Japanese girls turning that evil spirit into a frog was hilarious.

It's a pretty great meta movie about how us the viewers are technically the ancient ones that demand more out of horror films and ironically filling in clicheds like the last girl trope.

A great horror film to watch, especially if you're really not into horrors yourself.

I showed it to my high school class.

They hated it because they thought it made no sense.

Yeah my friend literally went "This movie sucks, it wasn't scary at all!" which showed he really missed the whole point of the movie.

It is another one of those movies people watch to pat themselves on the back while telling themselves how smart they are and how stupid people are who don't get the movie.
It is just some more overrated tripe.

I mean, I don't think it takes a particularly clever person to get it, just someone that is familiar with the genre. I even thought the spoilered tag in the OP was a bit to on the nose and seemed a bit pretentious, but if you like the genre, it's a super fun and clever movie to watch at least once.

No, it's one of those movies where if you watched a lot of scary movies and know of the tropes or the patterns, you'll understand a lot of what they're actually making fun of, all the while being a fun scary romp itself.

It's a cleverly structured movie that constantly plays with the audience's expectations and ends in a very Evil Dead 1-esque non-ending

It's a satire of horror movies. Similar to how Scream was but it goes even further with it and makes it the twist and turning point of the movie.

It's great. Especially if you have no idea it's coming up and you're a big horror movie buff.

Yeah I remember asking my friend what kind of horror films he had in his dvd collection, and he randomly picked this film. I had a great time with the movie.

So then you'd know it's nothing like Jason X. Not even remotely.

Meta humor and self referential isn't the only things people refer to when they talk about deconstructions.

I like that it starts out as a generic cabin in the woods movie and slowly escalates behind the scenes but it's still not a great movie. The early parts aren't any less cliche just because they're supposed to be. The sequence at the end is really fun but is just kind of ridiculous chaos with all the things just because. It's a decent movie but I've never had the desire to rewatch it.

^Not to a ridiculous degree but there are a lot of people out there trying to deconstruct the movie and lots of "Cabin in the Woods EXPLAINED" videos when it was never trying to be very deep. it keeps taking you deeper and deeper into the tropes but it's all pretty much laid out for you, just to have fun.

I mean you have the sexy girl who's actually super smart and not slutty but faithful with a boyfriend, but since scary movies need her to be a bimbo, they literally shoot a bimbo laser beam to fit the narrative. Also, since they had to work with whatever group of kids that go into the cabin, but they need a virgin for their overly specific and convoluted ritual to suppress some demon god thing, they just use whatever meek girl there was in that group, who wasn't a virgin, to perform the ritual. It's commenting on how the group of kids that do end up in theses scenarios are always so specifically fitting for the main monster, when irl, you'd not get such a neatly tied group of kids in one room like that. So the people behind the scenes just worked with whoever they got.

Like how in Friday the 13th, you have an entire group of kids with even number of male and female so that they can have sex and be killed by Jason, or how there's always a trope of people that can get killed in a certain order. Speaking of order, the stoner kid survives to the end lol, when he'd be an early one to die

Yeah it's obviously not even supposed to be a deep film either. The film fucking starts with 2 guys doing office banter and the title screen cutting in at a comedic timing.

In the age of YouTube pretty much everything that shows a bit more intelligence than Michael Bay's Transformers gets this treatment.
