Well, I was, but I was just told they have HPV, and that I should get tested myself. I'm going to, but I'm anxious about it now (gotta wait a few days due to work) and would like to find out if they were tested before we got together.

Not really. If they are a sexual partner. Especially these days. People use less protection because of advances in the pregnancy prevention. But don't use protection because "It's fine if they're both clean"...

Don't get too anxious. I know that sounds kind of redundant, but transmission rates are usually quite low. Same with herpes. Most of the time, it's only more highly contagious during an outbreak, which the carrier is usually quite aware of.

HPV can cause cancer of the penis, anus, throat, tongue and tonsils.

Buy them a personal STD testing kit for their birthday and say nothing.

There is a vaccine against HPV. It's free from most insurance companies and some local health departments. The FDA recently changed their recommendations and now advise everyone from age 11 to 45 receive the vaccine. The earlier you get the shots, the better.

Maybe the politest way to introduce the subject is to tell them when you were last tested, in case they're worried; the hint being that this is time for them to reciprocate and give you the same information about themselves. That's what I used to do, and my partners seemed to appreciate the gesture.
