The Girl Scouts may want to add a Gamer merit badge to their STEM program. A new study from the University of Surrey in the U.K. found that girls between the ages of 13-14 who identified as heavy gamersthat is, clocking in over nine hours of playing time a weekwere three times more likely to pursue a STEM degree compared to girls who were non-gamers.

The study, published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, also found that 100% of the girls who were already in STEM programs identified as gamers.

The same cannot be said of boys studying in the STEM fields. While girls seemed to relate their interest in STEM to being gamers, boys identified themselves as gamers or not regardless of what field they were studying, leading the researchers to suspect that boys still experience far less pressure to conform to the gamer stereotype if they were studying a STEM degree.

Researcher Anesa Hosein, who led the study, thinks this correlation can help identify young women who may be interested in STEM early and get them on track to a career in the sciences.

Our research shows that those who study PSTEM [physical science, technology, engineering, and math] subjects at degree level are more likely to be gamers, so we need to encourage the girl gamers of today to become the engineering and physics students and pioneers of tomorrow, she said in a statement. It therefore makes sense, in the short term, that educators seeking to encourage more take up of PSTEM subjects should target girl gamers, as they already may have a natural interest in these subjects.

Makes sense to me.

I've been playing Shenmue lately and I can't imagine any female woman playing it who isn't a boring motherfucker who studies statistical data and likes to read books.

That image in the OP bothers me.

Who actually plays like that? The flat display must be either amazing or the perception on it is absolute garbage. Also that left arm/wrist isn't gonna last long like that. Further looking I can just imagine swinging that arm out of discomfort and nailing the vertical console, destroying the disc inside and probably taking the tv that's overhanging the edge with it.

I also like how 9 hours is enough to qualify as heavy. Hate to see what they'd classify 20-40. Soul destroying.

Ah, fair enough. I wasn't sure if it was directly related or not. What I do know is that looking at it beyond the obvious "this is for a picture" pose/setup the actual layout/positioning bothered me for some reason. Then it got worse the more I looked.

I know, I'm the worst. I'm also incredibly racist, speciest, and abusive towards living and non-living objects.

At least according to some. I hurt neighbor's cats by simply existing within a few yards of them without even doing or saying anything.

Everything might as well be. I used to know someone online who was/is a biological male at the time(dunno what they're up to anymore, nor care). Whole time I knew them they were known as a female for months. Eventually I found out and wasn't bothered by it, more so a suprise of "huh, well guess that's that".

I got so much flak from one of their friends because I used improper "they/them" instead of she. Ever say "where are they" in reference to a singular person? Yeah I did that and oh boy, got so much hate/fire because I didn't refer to them as she and got all kinds of "intolerant" and stuff speech. This was many moons ago, 10+ years ago.
What's sad is it's gotten worse, and now I see they're trying to push people into using more general/widespread nouns such as "they" instead of he/she nouns. Hearing that on the news is what reminded me of that garbage moment.

1 . 9 hours is a lot dude

2. They said heavy is OVER 9 hours a week. Not 9. Some of these chicks probably do have no lives and clock a lot more

/eyeroll

I'm making a joke about how some people flip out over gender and sex labels. Specifically, in this case, poking fun at the TC's redundant phrasing by toying eith the assertion that not all women are biologically female and how it might be safer to specify.

If that kind of joke is transphobic, I can't really be bothered to care.

It might be a lot for an adult with a job and kids, but that's nothing for a kid. I'd say any kid with a mild interest in games should generally reach 8-10 in a casual week. Heavy shouldn't be anything under 20-30 hours.

You have apparently never been a child in your life then. Children have a shit ton of free time. Someone who spends an hour and a half per day on their hobby is not heavily into that hobby. They have a passing interest in it. If a kid spends an hour per day outside, I would not say they are an outdoors enthusiast. If a kid spends three or four hours per day outside, they really love being outdoors. If someone reads an average length book per week, they are not heavily into books. They have a passing interest. If someone reads three to five books per week, they have a heavy interest.

"Heavy" has a connotation of a significant amount of time, maybe even to the point of an unhealthy obsession in some cases. Ten hours is completely average and would mean you have a multitude of other hobbies and activities. It means you spend 70-90% of the rest of your free time on other activities.
