Dozens of black senior citizens in Louisville, Georgia, were ordered off a bus bound for the polls Monday after county officials said the event constituted prohibited "political activity." Activists called it an "intimidation tactic" in a razor-thin race for governor that's become engulfed in a fight over voting rights.

Polls show the contest between Republican Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams is basically a dead heat. Civil rights groups are suing Kemp for putting more than 53,000 voter registration applications on hold, mostly from minority voters.

Abrams is vying to become the first African-American woman governor in the South. She has accused Kemp, who currently oversees Georgia's election system, of dropping more than a million voters from the rolls since 2012 and closing polling places in African-American communities.

"He is someone who is tilting the playing field in his direction and in the direction of his party," Abrams told CBS News' Nancy Cordes. "It is absolutely voter suppression."

The biggest controversy surrounds the new "exact match" law that put the registrations of 53,000 voters, most of them African Americans, on hold because of discrepancies in the way their names are spelled in state databases.

In its ruling, the appeals court said the law was intentionally designed to discriminate against black people. North Carolina legislators had requested data on voting patterns by race and, with that data in hand, drafted a law that would "target African-Americans with almost surgical precision," the court said.

The Rs really don't like it when black people can vote.

"Prohibited political activity"

A bus transporting eligible voters to the polls, giving the elderly the chance to exercise their rights as American citizens to cast a ballot, halted because apparently a bus ride is as disruptive and intimidating as a group of protestors blocking heavy traffic and causing a public disturbance.

This is disgusting.

Was the bus specifically for democratic voters, or were they open to voters of all walks of life granted that they were elderly and required the service to get to a polling station?

If the bus was running solely for Democratic voters, with the intention of only picking up those voting blue, then this action would make a lick of sense. If the people taking the bus were all intending to vote Democrat, but the bus was open to all voters, then this charge is still wrong.

No idea.
The article gives the bus incident a paragraph (actually just a single sentence) with minimal details, then the rest of it is a repeat of the Brian Kemp shitstorm from last week.

...Seriously, there was this hilarious incident that happened to me once. I work at the Attorney General's office and got a phone call from an old lady asking to speak with Russell Suzuki (the AG). I told her that the only way to contact him is to send an e-mail, and right after I said that the lady screams: "THAT IS DISCRIMINATION! I DON'T HAVE A COMPUTER!". A smart phone is in the $1,000 price range and a basic laptop is $200-300.

It makes sense that they want to help people who cant get to the polls, but I think things could be handled more efficiently. Rather than drive everybody to and from the voting centers, why not bring a tech van with a mobile wifi hotspot and make a mobile voting center?

Most of us dont need a smartphone. There are probably a few of us who use them for work, but the rest of us could easily make do with a classic flip phone. The point of that statement (which I didnt even make) is that if you are on a strict budget, then you shouldnt make a purchase based on status and popularity.

The only reason that I have a smart phone is because my phone plan gives them to me for free.

There are PLENTY of smartphones that don't even cost $100, let alone $1000. They might be kinda shit, but they still work for basic shit like that.

Heck, I've seen smartphones here that cost about NZ$50 (about US$33).

The only time I'd ever advise someone to buy one of those is if they can't afford something at least a bit better, but such people do exist, and for them, it's a viable option at FAR less than the $1000 you're claiming.
