Yes, but for some people not having them is even worse.

Take them if you absolutely need them; avoid them if you at all can.

Been on Lexapro, Zoloft and Prozac. None of them made me feel the least bit different, good or bad after months of use. I'm honestly not sure they in themselves do much of anything but that's just my anecdotal evidence speaking so if it helps you then more power to you, if it doesnt then stop wasting money

That kinda thing still happens in places where they cost fuck all (if not literally nothing).

The medicine or seeing the doctor? Either way that doesn't do anything to disprove my point. I'm simply giving you what I took from 3 meetings with 3 different people that gave me 3 different scripts that I abided by for months at each time so what do I know?

The "this one doesn't work, try another".

Maybe they really are full of shit, IDK, but they do this even in places where they aren't getting much (if any) money for it, and if anything, it's costing.

Oh. But that's my biggest issue with it. Idk maybe I'm just paranoid but I got weird vibes from each doctor I got prescription from. The therapists I saw afterwards were pretty good though. Except for one that basically kept bumming my cigs for the whole session. :-/. And none of the medicines helped at all. Didnt make me feel better, didnt make me feel worse.

But in short, I'm just putting my experiences out there. I'm not trying to dissuade anyone else from seeking out help because I've seen it help. But I think therapy helps more than SSRIs and that's just my personal opinion.

I'm no expert, but I have to wonder if maybe it's a matter of different conditions with identical or near-identical symptoms (but different underlying causes), and SSRIs only help with some of the potential causes. I've definitely known people they've helped for; but I've also known people they haven't.

There's really no truly effective treatment for mental illness out there. It's all basically just trading one imbalance for another, one set of symptoms for another. A lot of stuff can cause long-term damage, particularly if prescribed during youth. They can snuff out a lot of potential, make you lose the things that make you who you are. Some people may find the drugged version of them preferable, but I think the majority will not. Especially after treatment has persisted for several years.

It's a shame that medicine really just exists to treat the symptoms. Especially since for decades now they have taken the approach that serotonin is always the culprit when in reality it plays a small role or possibly no role at all in most people. They should be looking at nutritional deficiencies and the root causes of those if it isn't as simple as poor diet. Inflammation and histamine response, potential autoimmune conditions, etc. Get right to the heart of the problem, don't just knock it back with pills.

They're effective for some people, and for others they are not. The only help I've found from SSRIs are for insomnia, and atypicals ended up being effective for me. My mom had a temporary bout of depression and Prozac helped her through it.

Everyone's brain is unique, you need to go through the motions to find what works. I changed meds & doses for almost a decade until I found a combination that worked. I get the skepticism and paranoia, but in the end I found some effective treatment. Not everyone is the same, but I won't say that SSRIs are bad for everyone.

i dunno man i stopped taking SSRI's recently for the first time since i was like 10, got put on a mood stabilizer instead for now and i've been fucking miserable. also caused big time sensory overload which fucking sucks. i think the biggest shock getting off SSRI's has been the gigantic uptick in my sex drive and arousal level. antidepressants just fucking wrecked that and it's been weird dealing with such a shift

Why were you on meds so early? I'm legit curious, I've had classmates leave in middle of class when I was in elementary school to take their medicine, and honestly a lot of them were the most reserved people in class, it was almost haunting to see them be announced by the teacher it was time to leave. What made you have to go on pills so damn early in your life?

Yeah. Medicine is a lot of trial and error. Everyone is different and it isn't even unique to these types of drug. I see people constantly changing prescriptions at work.

noticeable anxiety from an early age. i was already exhibiting extremely anxious and avoidant behavior and my parents decided to try to do something about it. got put on paxil, albeit not a strong dose by any means, and was on that basically until the end of high school. god was that a complete bitch to get off of
