I never go out of town on the weekends. Any other weekend, I would have heard the sound of the pump sucking air and I would have seen what was happening before it got bad.

I step inside my apartment, and hear the pump gurgling. I thought, oh, power must have gone out. That's what happens when the power goes out. Then I look at the tank, and I go, huh, the water looks really cloudy.

I finally dawns on me that I'm looking at an empty tank. I look down and the carpet is soaked. The wooden bar area where the tank was sitting is all warped and inflated. There's an awful smell that you can smell from even outside the apartment.

Man what a disaster. I told the management but I dunno what they're gonna do about it. Had a bunch of fans on it over night. I mean things can get dry sure, but the carpets gonna have to come up. The smell ain't going anywhere, and mold will form.

I only had one fish left, a little cory catfish. He actually made it! There was like an inch of water left, and he was alive at the bottom. I took him to a nearby creek and put him in it. He probably won't last long in the wild, but he'll be free for a while.

Any idea how it happened?

I guess it was just an old tank. It was the connection between the glass and the plastic base part.

I don't know. I talked to the office, and they're gonna have guys go look at it, pull the carpet up and put fans and demuidifiers on it. But from there, I have no idea how we're gonna proceed. October is video game month for me, I just wanna sit and relax, but now all this is happening. Gonna have to move my living room furniture, sofa and giant ass tv and tons of cords and cables. I feel like that dog in the cartoon with the burning room, and he's smiling and says "this is fine". I don't know if I'll be financially responsible for it or not. I do have renters insurance.

Also, this was after helping my sister move to a new house (that's where I went). So it was already a grueling weekend of physical labor, and my body was all sore and tired, and I came home to this.

I went and took a look during lunch and they pulled up all the living room carpet. All the padding was tossed out to the hallway outside. Big fans and a dehumidifier are all setup. Right now my place basically isn't in a livable state, I'll be staying with my neighbor next door.

What I don't like the looks of is they still have the carpet itself in there, drying it, like they're gonna try to reuse it or something. I don't see that as viable. It needs to be replaced.

Hmmm I've been thinking about getting a fish tank and this never occurred to me....

Sounds like things are in motion to get it fixed though so you're lucky in that regard. 2 years ago my dishwasher busted a line while we were sleeping and flooded both the first floor and basement. It was a freaking nightmare and took 4 months to fix everything

They're going to try drying/cleaning it first, then replace it if it still smells.

I had a slightly similar thing happen at my last apartment. Maybe the story will help you.
A water pipe in the apartment above me broke and started slowly dripping into my living room. In the end it ended up needing over a week to dry.

They told me to get anything I needed from the apartment and then they moved everything out of the living room and put up plastic tarps around the living room and put a big dry heater in there. The apartment company gave me a free stay at another apartment in another complex until it was dry.

Then an inspector had to come in and check for any mold between the apartments. They ended up replacing half the ceiling and a few support beams. I was let back in my apartment about two weeks after it first happened.

So Allstate renters insurance will not cover damage caused by a fish tank that leaks.

I'm pretty sure the apartments are going to make me pay for the repairs as well.

So I'm probably gonna have to pay a couple thousand dollars here.

So basically I'm cursed at this point.

I got in a car accident on the way home from work yesterday, and it was a scary one. It wasn't my fault. Just driving down a highway at about 65 mph, and all of a sudden, bam, I'm hit in the back left and my car wants to go wild. I manage to make it to the shoulder. So now the back left of my car is all smashed up. It was a huge septic tank truck that hit me. They had insurance and admitted to fault so everything should be fine financially, but I could have died! I could totally feel the car having a mind of its own, wanting to wiggle and veer off everywhere. My video game skills kicked in, thankfully. I could have flipped or gone headfirst into the concrete barrier or into a side ditch.

Glad youre okay! Sorry about the last water damage. Its good that the other driver took responsibility and didnt run. Too bad fish cant do the same. Its hard to get insurers to cover water damage. Do you have a good landlord? Would you be able to work out installments or something if needed?
