I honestly don't know where they were going with it. Even among the early game bugs, it stands out for its utter uselessness.

Look at this. Bug/Flying-type, but it couldn't learn any moves of either type. And even if it could, its Base 35 Attack stat means that it would fail at using those anyway. And almost all of its offensive movepool is Physical (it's Special Attack stat isn't all that great, either). It was somewhat geared for a support role, but it fails at that, too.

It lowkey has great special defense though, but yeah support role at best. Its shitty typing pretty much makes it pointless as any sort of defensive mon.

I used one on my playthrough of Ultra Sun because I had never really used one before. It's not just that it's bad, it's that it's completely outclassed by pretty much every other Bug type. And that's too bad because I like the design.

Decent special defense but horrible HP and weak to ice, electric, and fire, some of the most common offensive special attacks

Yeah! Maybe give it an ability that changes the weather or area to something that gives a boost to bug, grass, earth and rock types. I mean with that and better defenses, it would become neat

Ledian makes Ariados look good by comparison, and Ariados is also really bad.
Butterfree was the most successful starter-bug back then, because it could lean on Confusion for a bit. I wish they could all be half as good as Scolipede.

Yeah. It had a usable Attack stat (in fact, 90 Base Attack was considered good back then) and could get a powerful STAB move in Sludge Bomb.

This. It really is a cute-looking Pokemon, but they never even gave it a fucking chance.

Hell, Farfetch'd was more capable back in the day than Ledian. (And still is thanks to First Impression lol)

It has better-distributed stats than Ledian(90 Base ATK is almost respectable!), but it's slow as hell and its movepool is dire. The only good move it learns naturally is Psychic(good luck running it off Ariados's special attack). It can get Sludge Bomb though, if you're willing to burn the TM(and why not?) which automatically makes it leagues better than Ledian, but it's still really bad.
I've always had a soft spot for both Spinarak's and Ariados's designs though.

he makes a pokemon topic putting forth his opinion except what hes really doing is trying to see if his thought is a good idea or not. 100% of the time its not and the board universally tells him why his plan is wrong and how to improve. but he never learns.

Yeah, but it was light years ahead of Butterfree and infinity ahead of Beedrill though.

Of course Pinsir, Scyther and Heracross are all better physical bug options but you get Spinarak early so it's a toss up for in game. And I mean, who play gen 2 competitively these days?
