I've mostly heard that it feels like a movie that was hidden away in a time capsule for the past fifteen years and has only just been unearthed.

Basically, that it's a great early-mid 2000's-era superhero movie on par with stuff like Tobey Maguire Spider-Man and the X-Men movies, but it doesn't really hold up to the MCU-level expectations that most superhero movies are judged on today.

i still like the first two x-men movies and the first two spider-man movies. if venom is on the level of those i'm actually interested in seeing it.

i'm sure spider-man 1 isn't very good but i've seen it like 2000 times (because i love spider-man and there weren't many quality superhero movies out at the time), so i have a soft spot for it.

kind of, but at the same time it was very obviously super heavily edited in post to make it pg-13, so it also feels like a bland corporate product

there were a lot of times during the movie where I just kind of zoned out and forgot I was at the movies. just lost in thought. my friend fell asleep during the motorcycle chase scene and I had to lean over and wake him up.

it's just bland. again, it's not AWFUL, but it's really soulless. no thought put into the characters outside of Venom. a lot of the events and timeline don't add up. motivations are fairly unclear. the villain is as two-dimensional as it gets. before this my standard for "bland villain" was Malekith from Thor 2 and Yellowjacket from Ant-Man, but Riot takes it to the next level. perhaps the most cookie-cutter villain ever.

i'd say Thor 2 is actually an apt comparison to Venom, they might be on the same level, but Thor 2 had some character at least. Ant-Man was definitely better overall too.

this entire plot point bugged me

Eddie is a super handsome journalist who had his own show and even after getting kicked out of his apartment he STILL has a nice apartment in San Francisco and yeah he couldn't get a job for 6 months but that just strikes me as unbelievable. He is definitely not a loser in any way.

The idea of the Venom symbiote being a loser is also a really weak plot point. What defines a symbiote being a loser? not making big blades? that's it? it's a classic case of them telling and not showing. really lazy writing.

I know it's a bit nitpicky but the standards for these types of movies have been raised. Venom really is a step backwards towards Daredevil.

I would like to reiterate again that it is not AWFUL, just kinda bad-ish. definitely better than Suicide Squad and most DC movies. Might be better than some of the worst Marvel movies. At least I wasn't seething with rage like I was in Thor 2.

is the symbiote evil in this movie?

that's always kinda bugged me about venom, in every story I've read about him he seem's so close to being interesting, but it's always tinged with the fact that the symbiote itself is evil and wants bad things

the eddie / venom relationship in this movie actually kinda sounds like what I've always hoped they'd accomplish with the symbiote
