hey i like doing spreadsheety contesty stuff and i think this is a concept that isn't in action this year but i wasn't around for the years it was a site thing and forget some of how it works, if some people could help remind me of the format i'm happy to run it and can probably throw in a uhhhhhhh $20 steam game reward

for those who know even less than me, the idea is a contest you can keep up on day by day if your overall bracket turns to shit. as long as your pick is in the day before it's fine. the rewards increment for each consecutive match you get right, but reset to zero when you get a match wrong, which is why you want to BANK your points from time to time. Banking will reset your streak but obviously, your points are banked. And the person with the most points at the end wins.

Things I need help with... how did scoring work exactly? 1 point for match 1, doubling per match? and with 4 polls at a time, are you gonna have to sit out a whole day to bank? i would assume so as i can't figure any other reasonable way to do that.

at 4 matches per day, what constitutes breaking your streak? Getting a single match wrong? Getting all 4 wrong?

um quick thought i guess... points only increment per day and your streak is broken if you get any match wrong?

so I never did this contest in the past, but I do set up random games for my students every week so I have a lot of practice gamifying things. Here's what I'd do

You have 3 HP. When you get a match wrong, you lose an HP. If you hit 0, you lose all your points.
Points earned double every day you keep your streak alive, but banking also resets the streak, like before. And yes banking means you take the whole day off, missing 4 matches, but it heals you.

This way when you're at "low health" you have to debate, "hmm I could bank now but I'm PRETTY SURE I know all 4 of tomorrow's matches... I'm gonna go for it!" and then screw yourself.

(possibly change to 2HP idk how hard ya'll think the bracket is)

oh damn yeah LMS was good last time round and if i remember right that was a stand in for the streak contest yeah.

Yeah but LMS also had some kind of opt in mechanic where you could chicken out from some matches, iirc.

And the bank thing. I'm pretty sure there was a game where people kept posting BANK in the thread.

I hope I'm not mixing two different things.

...though I kinda prefer no chance of elimination since I'm already gonna get eliminated so fast in the guru, y'know? :P

I feel ya, I remember being eliminated from Guru and LMS in quick sucession, while giving up on Oracle and Spread Betting after a few loses.

Yeah I think those were two different contests. There was the bank one, and the one where you were eliminated.

I'd like to have both tbh.

that was the idea, but i've realised there are complications. i'm still looking for some feedback before i decide how to do this.

I'll participate if you run this. Check your gmail- I've granted you access to the spreadsheet I used in 2015 to run the Streak Contest for the game bracket. You should be able to update this for Characters and it would pretty much run itself. Well, in terms of scoring and the leaderboard, you would still need to input picks.

- by default everyone's board would say BANK for all 150 matches. as people post new picks, you overwrite BANK with the name of the character they selected for that match

- as results come in, you enter them into Col A

- that will cause Leaderboard tab to autoupdate everyone's scores
