Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The software giant started rolling out the update during the companys Surface event earlier this week, but some Windows 10 users immediately noticed their documents were being deleted. We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating, says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update.

Microsoft is now recommending that affected users contact the company directly, and if youve manually downloaded the October update then please dont install it and wait until new media is available. Other Windows 10 users have been complaining that the Microsoft Edge browser and other store apps have been unable to connect to the internet after the October 2018 Update, and the update was even blocked on certain PCs due to Intel driver incompatibilities.

Its not clear how many Windows 10 users are affected by the problem, but even if its a small percentage its still surprising this issue was never picked up during Microsofts vast testing of the October update. Millions of people help Microsoft test Windows 10, but the company has struggled with the quality of Windows updates recently. Microsoft delayed its Windows 10 April 2018 Update earlier this year over Blue Screen of Death issues, but those problems were picked up before the update reached regular consumers and businesses.

Microsoft was planning to push the latest October update out to all Windows 10 users next Tuesday, but thats now likely to be put on hold while investigations continue into this major deletion problem.

Update, October 6th 6:50AM ET: Article updated with additional details on the October 2018 Update issues.

So, Microsoft, how's those mandatory auto-updates workin' out for ya?

Yup. THESE are examples of why you can never trust updates and why forced updating should be a crime. It may not happen often but it's certainly not minor if you lose important things.

I always delay the updates for as long as possible, and wish I could never get them.

The Creator's Update was fucking up my sound for a long time, like...even after it became truly mandatory (couldn't even opt to roll back after getting it anymore), and I was pulling tricks like intentionally ending process on the update mid-install to buy more time. Thankfully, by the time they slipped in the update while my guard was down, the issue was resolved.

All I want is security updates. Nothing else.

Remember when you had to click a button if you wanted to install an update?

Microsoft fucked up hard. They should have done what Linux did, background updates with no reboot. No one would complain and no one would opt out. That would have been a forward-thinking thing to do, something Disney would have done. But Microsoft is malware. That's their standard.

Corporate sociopaths don't understand loyalty. They're like dumb dogs that want to eat what's in front of their face.

And take a page from Apple's book. Put out the same thing, give it a new style, and everyone will psychologically assume it's better. Stop adding obscure features no one cares about. Do something more productive, like masturbating.

I like to have maximum control over my computer or anything else that I spend money on, so Windows 10, by nature, sticks in my craw. But, hardware and software companies seem to have been or will drop support for anything older.

So? If it works there's no reason for it to suddenly stop working. Like buying a new console each gen. I'd rather be left alone than lose control over my products. This goes along with my desire for physical discs. No support is better than too much.

I mean... it gets to a point where you can no longer obtain new web browsers, new games, new CPUs etc. unless you upgrade.

When I got my computer, I set all the privacy stuff as heavily on the side of "don't give MS anything" as possible, aside from like...trouble reports from a crash.
But I have no doubt that none of that actually matters, nor that with each new update, MS isn't "tweaking" some of those choices back to the default (ie, data sharing TO THE MAX!) without mentioning it.

Not Windows 10, Window 10 is nothing but trouble and a curse on PCs that run it.

See, for me it's always worse. Because that new style changes the location of settings that I often need to change, if they even have a new location and aren't locked on whatever was default with the update.
