It's the best near minimum wage job you can get. Working with food or outside would be so much worse.

I don't think anyone believes that retail is somehow worse than lower tier fast food jobs.

I worked at Dollar General for 9 months when between office jobs.

Other than the $7.25 hourly rate, I actually loved it. Customers could be shitty at times but the job itself was nice.

Retail is fun it just really isnt for everyone. Like literally every year we get some antisocial idiots coming in as seasonals and I just think Yo are you even trying to make the most of it?

Customers asking stupid questions isnt the end of the world, guys. I wish my problems were that minuscule.

Yeah, I can see how that might be a bit annoying, but it's far better than dealing with a customer that's a total jerk.

It's not that the stuff gets you mad, it's all those stupid questions add up over time.

I used to work for JetBlue and when I'm going home, I'd always get asked, "Excuse me, is this JetBlue, terminal 5?" When JetBlue loved to put their logo and flair all over everywhere. Literally most of the questions asked of me can be answered by looking at the giant signs and logos all around the terminal, but they gotta stop me to ask where the taxis are, when there's 3 taxi signs with arrows to his left.

It gets old, really fast.

And people using the same jokes all the time thinking they're clever when it's the 10th time that week you had to force yourself to laugh less they tell the boss you were rude for not finding it funny.

You all seem very unpleasant. I dont care if the joke was unfunny and its the 3rd time I heard it this week. Im not paying attention to the joke, Im gonna see it as a lighthearted gesture and choose to be happy that this old man took a second out of his day to try and get a random person to laugh.

Its the thought that counts, stop taking everything at face value.

i managed at a mcds for a while and the customer service experience ranged from fucking awful to okay, but the awful experiences mainly came from customers that were either violent, purposefully an asshole or extremely drunk/high. "normal" customers are fine and even fun to serve sometimes, but what really makes or breaks that job is the crew working there

Finished my retail stint a few years ago, but I agree. It's the customers.

I dont know what it is, but something about the air in any store turns otherwise rational human beings into raving monsters. A brutal reminder that YouTube commenters are real people. And yes, they do act that way in person.

Oh, I agree, I know the type of people you're describing here; anyone who's been in the industry does.

That said, theres "customers asking stupid questions," then theres "customers openly treating you as subhuman while you get to smile and take it while management caves, and rewards their shit."

The latter will drive a man to drink, in large enough doses. Fact is, retail is one of very few environments where it's ok and accepted for employees to get openly treated like shit. And modern gutless management culture is so grubby they wont stand up for their own in fear of losing Sharon's $12.

Theres only so long one can "make the most" of being treated like garbage by the public and disposable by the employer.

Better get tipped if these old folk want a convo.

Anyway I've sort of worked in retail at Jiffy Lube. Didn't meet a lot of customers that were mean but then again I wasn't a customer service advisor dealing with rude customers but we don't get them often. The wages are way too low for me to stay in that kind of job. The questions weren't the problem. It's the difficult ones that I couldn't answer that got to me.

I used to work at walmart (8 years). I still have my khakis and blue polos and sometimes just for s***s and giggles I'll wear them to go shopping.

"Can you tell me where the <X> is?"

"Oh, I don't work here."
