honestly I think it's a healthier societal trend than the emo phase that my generation of classmates went through. Like here, we can have some 13 year olds listening to bands hating themselves and like self harming and talking about death and destruction of themselves and other people... or we can have some kids doing some stupid dance moves made popular by a video game that they like.

I'd rather see the younger folks of today do some stupid noodley fuckin dance thing from Fortnite than cut themselves and listen to Escape the Fate.

Cutting yourself seems like it would be less painful than playing Fortnite and imitating the dances

And so the cycle continues. The Millennial transitions into the Baby-boomer.

unfortunately there are a lot of kids that will do some stupid noodley dance, never show signs of depression and then jump straight off a bridge because they feel alone in their depression and secretly hopeless. actually just saw a news piece on this the other day.

at least back then there was some relatively popular music to relate to when you got down and angsty. like what the fuck is there even now? rip angst rock/nu metal, rip emo and rip ever appearing sad thanks to unrealistic expectations w/ social media and peer pressure.

people used to blame teen depression/suicide on music all the time just like they blamed teen violence on video games. it's all a racket. it turns out when you're young your body is full of hormones that make you kind of crazy sometimes and that's just part of life. i feel bad for the pressure kids deal with to keep up appearances with social media in the picture. i have no doubt they have it much harder than i or anyone from my generation ever did with that.

I don't understand why these kids are doing the noodle dance every 10 seconds though
My nephew does it. What is the purpose? What purpose does it serve to do it every 10 seconds?

I dunno, I assume that it makes them happy. Didn't you ever learn something that you were super proud of as a kid, and tried to show it off to your family in hopes of praise? Did everything that you did as a kid have a point to it? I'm thinking that's where this comes from.

But yeah, people do this stuff a lot. It can get to be a bit too much.

Your post had some interesting points, with this last paragraph ringing particularly true imo. Of course kids are going to feel a lot of extreme emotions one way or the other, and a sad kid is going great to be sad and find an outlet for that sadness regardless of what the current popular trend is. I can relate - I was bullied for most of my school life, and I was on my way to a meltdown around year 6, when I was 11. It was hard because no-one around me wanted to acknowledge how messed up life could be, no media that I watched or read or listened to really resonated with the sadness that I felt. I watched movies geared towards adults, but it was just a bunch of jocks getting into car chases and shooting each other - so yeah, I can understand having no outlet for your rising negative emotions. My eventual outlet was a random viewing of End of Evangelion on TV, but I digress.

But I think it's still important to have these positive trends. If kids buy into them and do all the dances and shit, if they play this dumb cartoony game with other kids and make friends through the game, then that could give them another year or so of happiness, a brief respite before the fad ends and emotions run high. They can look up all the angsty media that they want on the internet, so there's still a chance that emo and stuff will make a revival or whatever - but I think with the airwaves themselves being less bleak and this decade being a lot more upbeat than the 90's and 2000's, kids these days might be more inclined towards bright, positive media like Fortnite and K-pop and stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a new weeb wave, with the bright pastel colours of these trends mixing in with anime's perchant for horror, blood and gore.
