I guess the reason it's baffling to people familiar with Venom is because there literally would be no Venom without Spider-Man. The reason he's the edgy version of Spider-Man is because the Symbiote picked up those traits from when Peter was wearing him. As far as I've seen in the trailers, he's not mimicking Spider-Man, so it's possible they're not going to do that, which would make sense. But even thwn, having Venom that's not basically the "evil" version of Spider-Man is jarring in itself since that was kind of the point of the whole character. And I kind of have to disagree with the latter half of your post. Venom goes to dark and edgy places every once in a while, but he was never R-Rated and super gory to me.
