How does this story have so many twists?

https://twitter.com/jbenton/status/1045798556018364416

So, you know the guy Whelan doxxed as the guy in his conspiracy of "He was the real culprit, Ford mixed them up!"?

Turns out he was a friend of Kavanaugh's who was going out with Ford that summer and was at the July 1 party. Kavanaugh testified that he was "Squi." Ford testified that she went out with him.

And yet Kavanaugh testified he and Ford, "did not travel in the same social circles. It's possible we met at some point at some events, although I don't recall that."

yeah okay

The twitter thread goes into more details but seriously the twists in this story are unreal.

how is there a "they both seemed equally sincere" narrative in the first place?

the most "seemingly insincere" thing ford did was making claims we do not have evidence of. kavanaugh was all "I USE MY CALENDARS AS DIARIES" and "DEVIL'S TRIANGLE IS A DRINKING GAME."

Okay, and...? I knew quite a few guys back in high school who I hung out with often, but whose girlfriends I met once or twice at most. If that guy comes out and says Kavanaugh and Ford were both with him all the time that's one thing, but otherwise this really doesn't mean much I don't think

I don't see how that's fishy at all. Especially when it's been over 30 years. My high school life is a hell of a lot more recent than that, and if you asked me about any girl who was dating a friend of mine and who wasn't already someone I knew before they got together, chances are I'd be saying I maybe met her but I don't actually remember it or her at all. Some girls I'd remember because they ended up part of the group beyond just being that dudes girlfriend, but that would be the minority. If I actually spent any length of time to talking to her I'd probably remember her, but if she just showed up once or twice, mostly talked to her boyfriend and that was all I ever saw of her, I wouldn't remember anything specific.

I'm thinking back on high school and the years after right now, and I can already kind of feel some blank spots in my memory where I feel like there was probably somebody else hanging around but I have no idea who, meaning if you asked me about her...I'd tell you "If she was dating <name> like you say we might have met, but I don't remember it at all".

fair point on the "it's been over 30 years" thing, though. not sure how much i will still remember of high school when i'm 50 years old.

I generally have a good memory for people! I can remember the names and faces of people I knew as a kid with pretty good clarity...*if* I interacted with them enough, or they were important in some way (like a teacher). Something has to make them memorable in the present for me to remember in the future. It's not so much about memory as it is about the fact that I think it's perfectly plausible for a guy to have barely ever spent time with his buddy's girlfriend, to the point that it's reasonable he won't remember her because he never really had any reason for her to stick in his mind.

you're kind of moving the goalposts with the "if he was dating a girl" thing, though. if she's your girlfriend you've moved past the dating stage.

do i remember all the girls my friends in high school dated briefly? no. do i remember all the girlfriends my friends had? absolutely.

I was using "girl he's dating" and "girlfriend" interchangeably there, actually.

Several of the longer term girlfriends of my friends I either barely knew, am pretty sure I never met (but not certain, which is kind of topical) or did meet but only after a long time, making it plausible that under other circumstances I could have never met her. There are some cases where I do know for sure that I met the person, but I can't remember a name or face, or when/where it may have happened...not actually 100% certain who they were even dating honestly. So even there where I can kind of remember someone was there, if you asked me about him/her, I'd be telling you I don't remember them at all since I don't have any way of knowing who you're talking about.

Really? I admit it's anecdotal, but in high school I'd say the people my friends dated were in my "social circle" and I knew them, etc. Maybe we were a tighter knit bunch or the experience was atypical? I'll say that this applies specifically to high school though, absolutely not the case for me in college.

If you guys think I'm way out of the line/off base here I'll concede. I just thought it was wild that the guy from that conspiracy theory wasn't some random dude but actually connected to Kavanaugh and Ford. The "Kavanaugh said he didn't know her..." part was secondary to me but I was trying to hit the main points of the twitter thread for people who didn't want to read through it.

I mean, I'd expect that people would know most of their friends significant others, but not all, and not necessarily very well. It certainly doesn't strike me as odd to not really think of a friends girlfriend as in your social circle, even if you have met her a few times. Add in 30+ years to the mix, and it doesn't strike me as implausible at all that someone might not remember. If they can question that friend and he ends up saying the three of them hung out together all the time? Yeah, then it makes him look like a liar, but simply being friends with her boyfriend doesn't really suggest to me that he had to have known her well enough to not be able to forget 36 years later.

For all the "I knew my friend's significant others in highschool" people...

Did you go to a private single-gender high school? Cause Kavinaugh went to an all-boys school. (I assume that changes social dynamics a little. It's not like he'd meet and learn the names of girls by being in class with them).
