Times can be tough in life, and a lot of us are brought up to be as self-reliant as possible when it comes to our emotional well-being. But a lot of folks run into experiences and emotions that they don't know how to properly deal with, and there are people who are ruled by the negative feelings they were made to feel years ago and who never quite heal from them as much as they would like to move on. Ongoing emotional trauma and negativity can lead to mental illness if not properly treated, and undiagnosed mental illness can in turn amplify and worsen the effects of emotional trauma and negative feelings.

Have you ever considered going to therapy to help work through your emotional baggage? Have you been able to find solace in your friends and family, or have you been brought up as a relatively well-adjusted person? What are your thoughts on therapy, as someone who's been before or as someone who hasn't been but has an opinion on therapy?

Im lucky enough to have no baggage or need for it, but think it should continue to be destigmatized and people who can even remotely benefit should be encouraged

no and if for whatever reason I needed it, I probably wouldn't do it. I don't really understand the whole telling a stranger your issues in life. doesn't seem like it'd help. but then again I don't get diaries or having idols either

I stopped going after I realized I wasn't able to let the mask slip and actually talk about the things bothering me. Maybe I'll go again.

Hell, I stopped going to anxiety group for my driving anxiety because the commute there gave me more anxiety than the group helped with.

Did the therapy thing for like 7 years on and off, they're basically friends you chat with. They taught me how to be a good listener, unfortunately when you start listening you start realizing most of the people you consider your friends are huge pieces of shit. I see it as an investment, it payed off in the long run I found someone who loves me and understand what a healthy relationship is.

I been to A.A. (court ordered). I'm not religious or an alcoholic for that matter but it was informational if you're opened and it doesn't seem that hard to just ignore the Jesus stuff and take some non-religious advice. I know when I realized everyone in that bitch relied on alcohol to not get anxiety during social moments. I didn't want that as an adult. Now I see a lot of people around me doing the same

I went to 1 session years ago when I was having trouble balancing a lot of things in my life. Was able to refocus and make the positive changes after that session.

Wife has been going for a few years now. Works wonders for her.

There are a few good responses here. It's definitely not for everyone, so no hate if you're not the biggest fan of therapy due to prior experiences or because it's not your sort of thing. And to folks who have been and who have had bad experiences, I'm sorry that the process wasn't super optimal. I've been to a few sessions, and I just got home from a meeting with a new therapist - it was remembering the last set of sessions that gave me the idea for this topic, because it really helped me emote in healthier ways. With the way that some folks on this board post these petty, pent-up buttmad posts to each other and melt down (i.e. nice troll, LordMarshal /s), I thought it would be interesting to throw the topic out there and see what CE's take on therapy is.

I recently started seeing another therapist, I'm eligible for these free Skype sessions where I come from so I go for the allotted amount of sessions when I can. Last time I had a really good therapist, she helped me though some really heavy revelations at the time, but I've just started a new set of sessions with a different therapist and I'm currently on the fence about her. I'm also approaching a different problem with this set of sessions, so things are sure gonna be different.

They don't always listen to you, one complained about my use of psychology (she invited me to a Jungian Society meeting). Bring something up that might be crazy (bugged color trend expert) and that could be the last time you hear about it.
