Opera is owned by a Chinese company and it implemented a free "VPN" service that is literally nothing more than a proxy service which is shady as shit, because at best it's false advertising and at worst they're doing something with that traffic.

Regarding privacy, every company does dirty shit like that, so unfortunately if you're that concerned about it then you need to ditch mainstream operating systems and go back to traditional flip phones :\

Google is more of a threat through Android and the services they provide beyond Chrome. Chrome itself isn't that bad.

There are a few viable alternative browsers if you're worried about privacy. The new version of Firefox is actually really fast. There's Brave browser, as well. And then if you really wanna go "off the grid" (well, not really, but w/e) there's the Tor browser.

As far as privacy settings go, Chrome is actually one of the best as far as letting you configure your settings to prevent sites from tracking you and whatnot. There are some good add-ons for it, too (there are good add-ons for Firefox, too).

If you do switch to Firefox just make sure to disable "Studies" as soon as you install it (well, disable crash reporting and the other reporting feature to Firefox, and that should automatically disable "Studies").

If you're worried about privacy get HTTPS Everywhere, Forget Me Not (lets you quickly set up rules for handling cookies from specific sites or entire domains, it's very robust), and then I use a combination of Ublock Origin and Privacy Badger.

https://www.waterfoxproject.org/en-US/waterfox/features/

Waterfox. Firefox but faster and more private.

It was possibly faster back before Firefox 57 came out.
It's also maintained by one individual who's basing it on the Extended Support Release, so you're getting security updates after they're pushed out to the main branch.

There just isn't really a need for Waterfox any more unless you really miss the functionality of certain old add-ons in your browser, but I don't know if that's a good reason to use a browser or not.

And I say that as someone who used Waterfox for several years.

You might also check out Vivaldi, which is made by the original Opera development team and it has a very distinct aesthetic reminiscent of classic browsers.

The only thing that sucks about it is that the more advanced settings are in a separate menu from the main settings ... menu. If you type Vivaldi://settings in the address bar you can get to the more advanced one though.

They relaunched it in 2013 using WebKit instead of its proprietary engine. So it's basically a shadier version of Google Chrome.

No shady chinese government spying on you I guess?

I honestly hope disabling my firewall is enough to install windows 8.1, at least then if Chrome works there I'll be back in familiar territory, they spy,too but apparently so does Firefox, so does Opera, so does Internet Explorer, every browser under the sun spys on you and the ones that don't are either shit, under developed or are full of holes that allow other things a window into your life.

I mean, they just reskinned Google Chrome and took out the Google functionality basically. And then put a "free VPN" in it that's just a proxy server... And then sold out to a Chinese company (I try to avoid companies based in China or Russia).

There's nothing inherently wrong with the new engine, but I liked the fact that Opera had something unique at one point and that there were more than just a few options for all these different browsers, since at this point it's all based off of whatever Firefox or Chrome is using :\

Vivaldi ... actually uses the same engine as Chrome does, it just has more interesting functionality to it imo.

If you want it to stop changing colors, I think you just go into the Settings screen, click Theme on the left side, and then either create a new theme or edit the one you're using with the + button or the pencil button.

Then it'll show you Theme Options and the top one there is to use the active tab's color as the window color, just uncheck that.

Also heads up that it used to be that Vivaldi crashed when loading video on reddit - I don't know if it still does that or not, that was a while ago >_>.

As far as privacy goes, Vivaldi assigns a unique ID to each installation and collects a tiny amount of information from the user: https://vivaldi.com/privacy/browser/

Basically, they look at (but do not log) incomplete (without the final octet) IP addresses to see which geographic regions users are in, they look at web browser version (to see if your browser is up to date), and they look at CPU architecture and screen resolution so they know how to prioritize troubleshooting and testing.

Some of the default bookmarks are there because of partnerships with Vivaldi and Vivaldi gets a kickback from that. The bookmarks can put cookies on your computer, since they're websites, but you're not required to keep those cookies or those bookmarks if you want to just firebomb the default sites when you install it.

Everything else is based on the third-party services you may or may not use, like searches (if you're using Google then of course you have to accept to Google's search terms of agreements), password management (if you're doing it locally it does it through the services the Operating System provides to encrypt the data), etc.

It's not a VPN, though.

It doesn't encrypt your data, and they actually log your usage data, and according to their privacy policy they could use that information for a fair amount of ways (including "limited marketing purposes").

It's... really just a proxy server marketed as a VPN. Which means your data is no more secure than if you were just browsing the internet normally without any additional protection.

It's great if you want to get around regional blocks on Netflix or something though :\

I use Opera as my secondary browser. I find it useful for when I want to view some of the... seedier sites, if you know what I mean.

So that I don't have to worry about my favorites and most viewed pages getting all screwed up. The fact that it has good anti-ad protection right out of the box is really nice for this, and a lot of the spam that tries to hijack my browser just doesn't work in Opera. Also I find it to be very resource light in general compared to other browsers.

Strangely specific thing that I've literally never tried in my life until just now rofl.
You can middle-click on the back button to make it open in a new tab, but I guess if you're using a trackpad that's not the best option.

edit: I guess it's also not a super specific thing since a lot of people asked for this.
