Youve found $10,000 and are unable to immediately find the owner. Would you like $100 and a pat on the head instead, prole?

Right she could have just been absentminded but maybe that money was going to be used to pay for their bank that's going through hard times. You dont want the bank to fail do you? The owner might kill himself over it.

It is, you're right.

Does the court view found lost money as stolen? And is there any way they could actually catch you if you just never spent it? Like say you spend $300 and then sit on it for months. Spend $60 on something and then go back to sitting on it. It'd be one thing if you just went out and bought a car or something.

Nobody is entitled to a reward for a good deed, so I think this was generous enough. Ive found purses in store parking lots and brought them to customer service. The difference is that I didnt look through it first, so there could have been tons of money and I never got a news article or a reward.

If there's physical evidence showing that you took the money from the wallet, then yes you're liable. If they only suspect you and you went about it like how you're suggesting then you're probably less liable, but if they can get your fingerprints on the purse and wallet, then you're still fucked.

I just think that you wont be able to do too much at once with it anyway. If you go up to some retail stores buying something that is worth hundreds to thousands they might be suspicious. If you try to turn it in the form of a money order or cashier's check then they might be suspicious. In fact there's something about some locations requiring that they have a form to sign to give to the IRS for anything at $10,000, or if you try to do money orders in the form of $3000s then they have you sign papers.

That's why you wouldn't deposit all 10K at once. Spread it out over a year or two.

there are no banks near where the money was found, its mainly a nice residential area near the foothills

I've lost money. I grabbed my wallet because I trusted it around a group of "friends" (many were but at least one must not have been) and found that I was $80 short on being able to buy my new gaming system.

I learned to keep my wallet close and not leave it laying on the table. It was a lesson worth a lot more than $80.

I used to think like a lot of you until a friend put it in to perspective one day. He said, "Imagine you have lost your wallet, now imagine that your wallet gets returned, NOW imagine that all the money you had in it is still in it when you get it back. Think about how happy you'd be if it was." It really changed my perspective on lost things and returning them as found, in my opinion. It was actually a little while later that I had lost my wallet with a few hundred dollars in it and it had been returned with all the money in it that really cemented that sentiment with me.

If my wallet gets stolen and returned with no money, I'd be mildly annoyed at best. I can't know the person returning it didn't find it empty.

I'd be happy that I didn't have to replace my I.D. and my Social Security Card.

Oh I'm sure that moral superiority is worth more than $10k to some people. My beef is that he wasn't compensated enough. It would have been even worse if he wasn't compensated at all. Still, it's not like you can't have that sense of superiority while also being compensated for your good deed.

if you go to different stores and buy hundreds worth of stuff in cash, they're not going to flag you down. Like say you go to an apple store and buy a macbook pro in cash, who's going to report it?
