Current Events > Which do you think is the greater purpose of all these classic mini-consoles?

So, we all know that with all these mini-consoles being released, all of these are done so with games that we can easily get through emulation, and in some cases through multiple legit means.

So I think it's time we all came together and discussed what the greater purpose is for these things existing?

Is it 1) so that people can have nostalgic conversation pieces and brag about how they got one?

Or is it 2) so people that are aware of them, yet refuse to buy them and brag about how they resisted buying them?

It's one way of making people forget about backwards compatibility. The PS1 classics, leads me to believe that Sony won't do a PS1 classics backwards compatibility options for the PS4.

It's so they can make money without having to make a new game.

instead of spending a bunch of money on licensicing and stuff to just have a wide variety of ps1 games (like on ps3 or nintendos virtual console) they can make these boxes with a very specific list of games and make bank (instead of having to worry about wasting money on games that wont sell)

this is why i think both sony and nintendo ditched their efforts from last gen and opted for these mini consoles

all i said was is that from a business perspective these are probably easier and more successful than their previous digital methods

I think for the most part casual gamers don't bother with emulation but would jump at the chance to buy a pre-built machine that plays these games. Nintendo's retro consoles were the best of both worlds since they give you ample space to add more.

to make lots of money by playing to people's nostalgia with a cheap-to-manufacture device that they can price far higher than what it's worth

All of the consoles are going to fly out of people's windows and join to form a giant robot that advertises new games

i think Nintendo was testing the market's interest in NES/SNES games and since it did well, we have Nintendo Online
