at least for me, you can't. the coffee will just prevent you from sleeping properly later, and your brain won't be happy till it gets that last little bit of REM that it wanted.

if you know you need to get up earlier a couple days in advance, you can use coffee to shift your sleep schedule, but not in the way you might think. if you regularly drink coffee then you can NOT drink coffee for a couple days. the caffeine withdrawal will help tremendously with going to bed even something like 5-6 hours early. once you've managed to sleep for ~8 hours, 5 hours ahead, then start drinking coffee again right after you get up. I did this recently and pulled it off and it was awesome being at work like 5 hours earlier than I'm used to but nevertheless completely awake and alert.

L-Theanine works really well with caffeine. It's found naturally in green tea and is the reason why tea doesn't give you the jitters like coffee does. It's also a nootropic and can improve cognitive function and creativity while reducing mental fatigue, stress and anxiety. Combined with caffeine it can provide improved focus and energy over just plain caffeine.

(It also mixes well with melatonin, where it helps calm the mind to help you sleep better)

You generally want to take it on a 2 to 1 ratio with caffeine (200mg of L-Theanine with 100mg of caffeine, or one cup of coffee).
